Welcome Roofie

Hello Roofie,
I too was struggling to get the right reader. Thanks to this forum, I picked up the first generation Kindle and love it!

Hello roytravis and Marc, thanks for the welcome. I am leaning towards an Ecoreader ata the moment. I haven't hear of Central Book Services, whereabouts in Melbourne are they? And aren't Hanlin's the same as Ecoreaders, just rebranded?

I agree with you Kat, really annoying that we can see all the books we can't get rather than just what we can get.

yes thanks Marc, I'll have a drink!

Smile Hi I am also in Australia

I found this forum while searching for info to help me decide whether to order a Kindle or not.
I have ordered one of the new international Kindles and now I just have to wait for it to arrive.

I see you have the pocket pro. How have you found it and what about the 5" screen? I am a bit concerned about the size compared to the bigger 6" screen. Doesn't seem much but I wonder about the readability of the slightly smaller screen. What are your thoughts. Did you buy yours from the astak web page or ebay? Any other issues you might have?

And thanks for the welcome. Maybe this should go to another forum too?
Well both the 6" and 5" have the same screen resolution, so at the same text size each will fit the exact same number of words and lines on a page, except the 5" is about 23% smaller according to someones calculations here on MR. Both my wife and I find the 5" very readable without issue. What I actually did before buying I took screenshots of an ebook and resized it twice to the approximate 5" and 6" size and printed it out - kind of made me help in choosing the 5" or 6". Part of the reason in buying the 5" was the price, this was my first e-ink device and I was kind of risking spending money that potentially would not have suited my needs. After having the 5" I would not hesitate buying e-ink again, absolutely brilliant.

I bought mine through Astak, ordered it one wednesday afternoon, it arrived the following thursday, so I was quite happy with that. Took longer (according to the tracking) to get from customs to my house than it did to get from America to Australia. I have had absolutely no issue with the Astak Pocket Pro. So so you're aware, the Pocket Pro doesn't come with an AC charger that fits Australian power points, so either need to buy an adapter, or just a generic AC-USB charger (I paid $15 for mine), that or you can just charge it via USB on your computer.

All honesty my only regret was not buying an e-ink device sooner. We're actually planning on a second 5" in the very near future. Best of luck with your decision.

Does born in Melbourne and back living here count as "Astralian"?
If so, perhaps I can appeal for the following help here, because I am not getting it anywhere else:

I need people to download one or both of the short "Chapter Books" available on my site. They are free, and there is a choice of three formats for e-readers.

My need is for you to download and open them and let me know if the download is successful, and which brand of e-reader you used.

Find them here: http://www.sillybooks.net/Reader/Content-1.htm

My appreciation in anticipation of responses here or via the email address on the page... Roger

By the way, Roofie, I have a feeling that your librarian friend might well have been shown a demo model of the PRS-505 which wasn't properly charged. The USB cable which comes with the 505 and is supposed to charge the device is all-but useless (in spite of an optimistic reading on the battery charge icon). I had problems similar to those you described before I bought a mains charger. Since then the machine has worked like a dream with never a single problem.

I wonder what appeal Barnes & Noble's new 'Nook' e-reader (launched net week) might hold for our pals Down Under. Same price as the Kindle but with a much broader reading source base and a few (superfluous?) refinements like being able to see covers in full colour. Don't know if it's wifi facility extends to Australia yet, but I don't think Kindle's does either.

Good luck. Neil
