Thanks, Lilly; I've tried uninstalling, updating, uninstalling the update and reverting to original, uninstalling that, repeating the operation a dozen times over, and (today) going for the latest download. No change. I still can't get a left panel. So I can buy books and put them in the eBook Library ... I just can't move them to my reader. I have now deleted the Sony eLibrary and will never use it again -- after all, if you're not in the US, who needs it?

By the way, Patricia, Amazon (a parcell of rogues) makes a big deal of saying that the two buck loading for Kindle books bought in the UK "INCLUDES VAT". Yeah 'includes'. not 'represents'.

The purchase of 'goods' in the UK carries VAT of 19%, as appears to be reflected in the unpardonable Kindle cover price loading. But, as Amazon so clearly showed when it wiped books from owners' machines recently, an ebook isn't a 'purchase' at all but a mere 'licence'. Therefore an ebook is not 'goods' but a 'service' and carries only 6% VAT. Who gets the other buck and a half I wonder.

Looking at the huge range of prices and restrictions in ebooks (though I love ebooks and will never desert them), I feel that we're caught in a vortex of beastliness. This is a sea a-bubble with sharks where so-called 'pirates' seem to be the only folks playing from a fairly square bat. I woudn't download a pirate ebook, but I certainly sympathise with those who do in the face of 'legitimate' swindlers.

Hoots. Neil

I have left panel ... with this i can't try this method but You can try delate hiden system folder in:
(vista) C:\Users\"Your user name"\AppData\Local\Sony Corporation\eBook Library\

(xp i guessing) c:\document and settings\"Your user name"\local setings\Sony Corporation\eBook Library\

something like that...it is high chance that this fix problem, becouse this folders are not deleted when uninstaling aplication, but You probably lost Your colection data.

OUCH.

I had tremendous problems with version 3 of the software, which have all evaporated when I reverted to 2.5.

Incidentally, I positively decline to buy a kindle until they are sold from a UK warehouse (so that I can avoid the import charges) and until Amazon have a decent selection of books at sensible prices in the UK.

I first adopted electronic reading as a way of cutting down on the thousands of books in the house. I've now converted almost all my public domain books and given the treeware versions to charities. To be honest, I'm not too bothered if I buy the occasional paper bestseller, so long as I can save space with the classics.

I have many virtues, Lilly (I'm generous, mind-bogglingly intelligent, kind to animals and even some Englishmen, wonderfully witty, impressively creative and have, quite possibly, the sexiest male knees in France), but I don't possess much patience with folks who sell me something that doesn't work and then make in all but impossible for me to ask how to put things right. So, OK, I'm a bad person ... but at least I don't have to worry any longer about the eLibrary because it's in the dumpster where it belongs. Thanks for the advice anyway. Much appreciated. Very best.
