If Amazon started selling in epub format for those without kindles, and added epub support for kindles, I'd start buying a bunch from Amazon. They have books you can't get elsewhere, plus often the best prices.

No, but to truly dominate the ebook marketplace. They already have the kindle owners, they sell the other readers as well, and they clearly have the most books in kindle/ebook format probably a simple matter of converting the format once all the publishers are on-board and they will be able to sell books to all ebook buyers.
