I love my K1, saw no reason to upgrade.

But I don't think I'd every get a second reader for myself period--unless it was some tablet-like device to use for work.

Just no need. There's plenty of space on readers and it's easy to move stuff off and back on. And I don't care about having a mix of "good" literature and disposable literature on it at the same time.

I did buy a second K1 as a back up reader. I was nervous about losing or having the first disabled somehow. the device has become important enough to me, that being without one for any length of time was rather distressing.

I bought one of the international Kindles for a present for a relative, but for now I think my ebook device purchases are on hold for awhile. it seems as though big things are happening in the ebook world and it is time to sit back and watch for a bit.

A refurb K1 is pretty attractive, I recently bought a number of them for family members, however I didn't get one for a backup for myself...

Now you have me considering it damnit hehe. I am trying to save some money for that possible Jan 2010 Apple tablet. You never know!

You're right, I don't need yet another HD to store backup files.

As you know (and to clarify this for other readers, since I may not have been clear in my original post), I thoroughly love the Kindle 2 - the experience of handling it, of using it, of reading from it, and of buying books for it. I want that same experience with a backup device.

However, since the original Kindle is, indeed, an older technology, but - even more important - it has a different ergonomic feel (one which I have yet to experience), I was curious about buying one. Indeed, I would be using it to store books both on the SD card and the device's memory itself. (I have a kind of philosophical approach to that which would be different than the way I use my Kindle 2.)

The fact is this: I love ebook Readers and have quite a few (by some individual's standards), and I'm pretty sure I would enjoy the original Kindle.

I have a Kindle 1 and loved it.

I bought a used Sony PRS-505 as a second reader (for non-Amazon books) and it took me awhile to adjust to the smaller page turn keys. I hated it at first and had to use it exclusively for a week to get really used to it.

But then I tried switching back to my Kindle and having gotten used to the slim portability of the Sony, found it more cumbersome. You might find the same going from a K2 to a K1 especially if you commute with your reader as I do.

Personally, given all the changes that seem around the corner, I'm going to save my money and wait to see how things shake out over the next 6 months before investing more on readers when what I have today does what I need for now. (But take that from someone who is more middle-of-the-road when it comes to gadget spending).

I only just ordered my K2 (first e-reader) after the price drop last week, so have only had it a few days. I wasn't aware of the low price of refurb K1s when I ordered it, if I'd known I'd have been sorely tempted to get a K1 instead of a K2. I've still been tempted to get a backup, on the theory that the $149 is SUCH A DEAL! But after thinking about it, I don't think I am going to. I don't use my K2 in especially hazardous conditions, and if something did happen to it, my suspicion is that there will be new technology coming from Amazon early next year, and I'd rather buy that (I chose not to get the $65 insurance policy).

The prospect of new tech, and the failings of the current one are really my reason for holding back--I think I'd like the large page size of a Kindle DX for at home reading, but I'm not willing to give any more of my hard-earned bucks to Amazon for reading hardware until they give me a user-friendly way to use folders to organize my books!!!! So I am holding off for an upgrade to the Kindle DX. Though if they came out with a Kindle 3 I might be tempted into it if there was some really fantastic feature (though I can't even think of what that would be, offhand).

Sounds like there is some promise in the B&N reader reports and possibly others, but I expect to get a bit locked into always having some form of Kindle around thanks to the DRM'd books I'm buying from Amazon.

I would NOT buy a Kindle Reader as a backup. I believe in spreading my tech knowedge around -- that is, learn about new things. So I would buy one of the rival apps. I recently was corresponding with someone about the Q7, which is really just a small computer. It has a color screen, and I would use it as a backup -- it's not much over $200.

Nope, but I would buy my hubby a K2 and if something should happen to mine then I would not hesitate to steal his back. I might even be mean enough to swap them out and not tell him. Not unlike the his and her matching fishing rods he bought a couple of years ago. My fishing rod has never worked quite right and seems alot more worn than it should be. LOL I am a huge reader and my K2 goes everywhere with me. I don't lend it out, the hubby and the kid are not allowed to touch it. It is the only thing in the entire house that is just mine and for me. I am completely selfish about it. I don't appologize for my stance on it and the rule is clear, Leave my Kindle alone LOL
