Thanks for the clarification Sweetpea.

It seems like maybe if Amazon wants to compete in Europe, (where I bet a lot more people read per capita than in the US) they should just release a non-Kindle, ePub compatible reader. Heck, they might even find that it sells like hotcakes in the USA too...

Proprietary formats have killed or stifled a lot of good technologies in the past: such as beta VCRs and Apple Macintosh computers.

I don't know how much time Amazon's Jeff Bezos spends reading here, but all these great ideas & gripes might be better directed to kindle2-feedback@amazon.com.

Simply shipping from Europe, and Amazon is a global company, would give them a major advantage in price. But no. More, the version they're shipping is crippled compared to the US one in terms of web browsing, book prices are higher and so on.

Then there's the way Amazon operate, the DRM, the...

No, let's wait and see what Sony are doing for a wireless reader before we start jumping up and down in joy in Europe.

That depends where you live. You can if you live in Japan, for example. I'm sure the web browser will be "enabled" in more countries as Amazon do specific deals with local telecoms providers.

We'll see, but at present... (and it'd be badly unwise to count on it)
