Well.... I've had an iLiad as well, and my expctations weren't that high. iRex can't compete with anyone so far on this issue. I'm sorry, but I think I forgot that in your requirements list. The DR1000 and the Iliad can't be put to sleep, only turned off, and they use battery all the time when 'on'. If I brought my device anywhere travelling, I would bring a wall charger. I am curious to learn what the battery life of the DR800 is, but I don't have high expectations.

In any case, it works fine when I'm at home, and if I forget to charge it, I can still read while charging. If you are going to use your device mostly at home, I think you should put value in the larger screen - IMHO it's definitely nicer.

No you didn't forget. It's not really one of my requirements, I was just curious. If it will last 12 hours that would do me. I just found a couple of items on the iRex blog about the DR800SG battery life which sound promising:

Question: "What is the expected battery life in page turns or hours.
Answer: "Approx. [battery life] 6000 page turns or several days, but the exact battery life depends largely on the usage pattern."

Question: "Does this device [DR800SG] support sleep/suspend like the Kindle and Sony devices.
Answer: "Yes it does. It takes about 3 seconds to restart from sleep mode."

It's fine then 12 hours is more than the Iliad and the DR1000 has last for me, but 8-10 hour use plus ability to charge after that, has worked fine for me.

Hadn't noticed this - but it looks good. If it can do this, it's a definite improvement. I'd still bring the charger when travelling, but, yeah, nice

8-10 would be OK. It would be unusual for me to be away from a power source for that long, although we were without power for almost a week after Hurricane Ike blew through here last September. I'd better hang on to a good analogue book or two, just in case . Like the holiday photos, by the way. Very professional looking.

If you expect up to "a day", I think you would be fine. And good to keep a few analogue books around, too, you never know

Hurricane Ike... - I assume you live in the South-Eastern parts of USA. If you feel like it, I know you would be very welcome to add location to your profile to be showed by your avatar.

Wow! Thank you! I'm very pleased to hear to it. I have only had a "good" camera (SLR) since March, and I haven't been much of a photographer earlier, so it's been quite a learning experience. I'm just now writing a job application, trying to find something nice to say about my talents reg. visual design - this a nice boost

Wow. Amazon must be feeling the heat. The Kindle 2 price just dropped to $249. Makes the DR800SG $150 more expensive now. Might have to re-think this.

[Edit] Make that $259 and $140 more expensive. I originally saw this article
http://blog.taragana.com/n/amazon-cu...tition-188974/
However while the headline says $249, the body says $40 reduction which would be $259. This is confirmed on the Amazon sites which now says $259.

Found this today:

Selected interesting bits:

That’s why Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY), the nation’s largest consumer electronics retailer, has launched a Gadgets and eReaders collection spanning a wide array of products for customers to entertain their minds. Beginning Sunday, Oct. 11, customers can see, play and interact with these devices in a new shopping space launching at Best Buy stores nationwide.

• Irex: Later this month, select Best Buy stores will also offer the IREX DR800SG eReader with multi-mode 3G wireless capabilities and content from sources such as the Barnes & Noble online bookstore, various magazine publishers and newspapers.
So not before Sunday, that is concrete. But it sounds like probably after, not on, the 11th.

I'm very eager to hear more about this device too.

Thanks for the link. I hadn't seen that. That's sooner than I expected. I must admit I was somewhat resigned to having to wait until the end of October. I did see some rumors from a while back that mentioned the 9th though, which is close.

I'm still undecided on which way to go on this. Price favours the Kindle 2, and books are generally a little cheaper at Amazon than B&N too. However the DR800SG makes much better use of space (for me) and the 8" display makes the reading area about twice as large. I suspect when I see the DR800SG I'll get completey carried away and spend the $399 though . I have some Best Buy gift cards I can use too which will help.

I didn't have a chance to read all of the Best Buy announcement earlier (rushing of to work) so I missed this bit:

"Irex: Later this month, select Best Buy stores will also offer the IREX DR800SG eReader with multi-mode 3G wireless capabilities and content from sources such as the Barnes & Noble online bookstore, various magazine publishers and newspapers."

So wait 'till later in October after all. I'm so disappointed

They say no, it's exclusive to Best Buy, at least for now. They do plan to sell in other countries at some point.

I don't know if this will help you (if you're not in the USA), but it will be carried in Best Buy's on-line store.

Just a stock clearance for the "old" Kindles, most likely. The new "International" Kindle, with a GSM radio, is $279.

FYI, they said the same thing about the DR1000S (and the iLiad).

I would recommend waiting until real people start reporting what their battery life is, if that is an important feature. iRex doesn't exactly have a good track record when it comes to battery life predictions.

The good thing about it being sold through Best Buy is that you can buy it, try it for up to 30 days, and return it "no questions asked" for a complete refund. If it turns out to be a bomb, just take it back. I must say, I have a Kindle and an Iliad, and I much prefer the 8" screen of the Iliad, and I take the Iliad everywhere with me. I replaced the batteries with bigger ones, and I get at least 15 hours of continual reading time. Enought for me to charge it up on Friday at the office and use it all weekend.
