No.

I might just consider paying a /small/ fee to upgrade from existing DRMed single format to non-DRMed ePub/Multiformat. But I do mean small - no more than $0.50 per book.

But only if I thought the new format was an improvement on the old one - say bigger illustrations/better cover/fewer typos.

Even at $0.50 per book, it would cost me $250 or more to upgrade!

Without the DRM it is trivially easy to convert EReader to a format that the Sony supports using free software like calibre.

My personal value threshold for an eBook is slightly below the cost of a mass-market paperback. That's for one without DRM. DRM reduces the value further.

So while I'm not really willing to pay more for DRM-free, I believe I should pay less for DRM-infected. I think the prices are already artificially high, so raising them to just to provide what readers want is ridiculous.

What if the question was:

Would buy a DRMed ebook if it were sold at a lower price?

I would not pay more for a DRM free eBook as I only buy eBooks that are already DRM free or I can strip the DRM. So it's of no value to me at present. Once Sony goes ePub, I'll get all the remaining eBooks with DRM freed as ePub.

No, because then I'd feel obligated to not strip the DRM. Well, unless it was a /lot/ cheaper and it wasn't something I wanted to keep.

An by a /lot/, I mean 25% of the non-DRM price. And then only if the non-DRM price was under $10.

It depends on what you mean. IMO, DRM eBooks are already too expensive, especially since the DRM restricts a lot of the things you should be legally able to do. If they want to offer DRM vs non-DRM version, then the DRM should be cheaper than the current prices. If that's your model, then I'm OK with it.

There's no way I would pay more for something that is already overpriced, just to get capabilities that it should already have.

I would pay more for a DRM free version, but not too much more. I tunes had a good system when they offered the choice, 99 cents for DRM and $1.29 for DRMless. I've talked quite abit about how I don't want to pay more than $5 for a book, since I'm poor (not saying ebooks shouldn't be more, just that is all I can afford), so, if it is under that price range still, I would definitely pay more for DRM free.

As far as I am concerned, it is the other way around: I expect a DRM-free book at regular price, and would require a heavy discount in order to even start considering a DRM version. To be honest, I am not even sure there is any price other than zero that would make me buy a DRMed book.

I would never pay *more* for a non-DRM book.

Heck, I would never PAY for a DRM book, period. I would ONLY buy a DRM-free book.

But honestly, if they keep their current trend with eBook prices I'm sure more and more people will do with eBooks exactly what they do with overpriced OS's, games, apps, MP3s and the like - they will just go to their favorite website/FTP repository/forum/IRC channel/newsgroup/P2P network and grab their stuff for free...

I will never buy a book with DRM. Until publishers sell DRM free ebooks for under ten dollars I will continue to buy all my books used and the publishers won't see a dime of my money.

Not exactly. I won't buy DRMed ebooks. If someone offered non-DRMed books for a given price, I might be willing to buy them if I thought the value was reasonable. It's not really a continuum for me; DRM is a deal-breaker.
