I recall seeing in the early 1990's photos of the venues that had been built for the Sarajevo winter olympics a few years earlier. The structures were nearly all unused and were in awful shape. The expense and destruction in building facilities that are going to be used only once seems like such a tragedy, although they had their own special tragedy a couple of years later.

I believe that these days, VR, consideration of what the facilities will be used for after the event is a major factor is the judging of Olympic bids. A big factor in London's winning the 2012 games was the fact that it involved the complete regeneration of what had been a very derelict and run-down area of the city.

Excellent. I am glad to hear that is now part of the decision process.

Well Denver, CO is the only city ever awarded the olympics that turned it down. Something of a strange thing to in it's past.

I think the Rio Olympics will be much more fun than Chicago anyway.

Particularly since the U.S. has such horrible copyright issues.

Did Denver apply and then change their mind?

Honestly? Why did they bid if they didn't want it? Must have cost them a fortune!

Yes, somewhat shameful I think.. Apparently the Beaver Creek Ski Resort was built for it before the voters rejected it.

Frankly, I couldn't believe Chicago thought they had a chance of winning, what with all the bad press Illinois and Chicago politics have gotten in the recent past. Take it from a former Chicagoan, it doesn't matter who gets elected, the great Chicago Political machine isn't going to change. I was glad Rio won; although, I agree with others that it can be a huge burden on the resident population.

I have to admit I'm relieved that Chicago didn't get the Games, too. It sounds churlish, but I just didn't want to put up with all the massive construction, etc. as has been mentioned in previous posts. I live far enough out that most of it wouldn't have bothered me, except when we had to go in to Chicago for airport duty, which we'll still be doing in 2016.

On the day the decision was due to be announced, someone had the forethought to bring a radio to work, and a whole bunch of us gathered around it at the relevant time. When it was announced London had got them, most of my colleagues got really excited and started cheering. I groaned and skulked off.

As is that. I know of people who do that during Wimbledon each year (we're not close enough for it to be an option for us )

I think that a good planification is a key point in all this. Barcelona'92 improved the city a lot, and I think that they didn't left unused infrastructure.

It will be great to see it in Rio, but it means a lot of upheavel for the people there.

When they had the Olympics in Sydney in 2000 they shipped all of the homeless out of the city. They have a lot of slums in Rio, and a lot of crime. The crackdowns will probably be harsh.
