I already have a bunch of free books, in epub format, that I got from the Gutenberg project. Do these other sources sell new releases like Dan Brown's Lost Symbol? I also like to read J.D.Robb's In Death series and Michael Connelly's Harry Bosche detective series. Are these books released in epub format? One of the reasons that I bought a Sony reader instead of a Kindle is that I felt books would be available from more sources and competition would drive the prices down. I usually wait for a book to be released in paper back before I buy it. I won't pay $15 to $20 for a novel that I'll only read once.
My home town library used to carry digital books that were readable only on a computer. They have discontinued that. The last time I asked about ebooks, the told me that they had bought a Kindle and had it for rent, but that they didn't carry any books for it. So I guess they expect someone to rend the Kindle and then buy their own ebooks or just read the public domain books. I intend to take my Sony 600 to the library to show them and encourage them to support it with ebooks for loan. Budgets are tight now, so they will probably just yawn. Dave W |

Dave--Yes Books on Board does sell new releases, although I just checked and I wouldn't buy Dan Brown's Lost Symbol from them right now. They have it listed for $20.00 right now. http://www.booksonboard.com/index.ph...0388&v=details
You might want to check out their website. Also, I notice you're from Massachusetts. The Boston Public Library offers ePub and PDF books for download, and according to their website, anyone living in Massachusetts is eligible to get a library card. You can even sign up for an e-card on line at: http://www.bpl.org/general/circulation/ecards.htm Their collection of books available for download are available here: http://bpl.lib.overdrive.com/7D54933...en/Default.htm . They do have Dan Brown's Lost Symbol available in ePub format, but there is a waiting list for it. dordale ![]() |

Thanks, Dordale. I took the time to look up booksonboard and found the Scarecrow book. It's $9.45. The $20 is for the audio edition. I found that first, too, and thought, "you must be out of your minds to charge that much for an ebook." BTW, I have The Scarecrow hard copy book on request from my hometown library. I've had it ordered for several months and was originally somthing like 245 in line for it. I'm now down to 45. There is a Merrimack Valley consortium of libraries that share books and ship them back and forth. Each library could have 3 or more copies of a book. So a high number doesn't mean I'll have to wait long. I ordered "The Day The Earth Stood Still" DVD from the library and started out at 60 something. I got the DVD in only a week or so and was shocked to have it so soon.
Thanks for the tip on the Boston Library. I'll have to check them out. Of course, I'll do it all on line. Driving to Boston and then paying to park would not be a good plan. I could buy the hardcover edition of a book cheaper. Dave W. |

Me again - BPL update
Since it is free and I do live in Massachusetts, I applied for an ecard from the Boston Public Library. I put Michael Connelly's Scarecrow on hold. I'm number 4 on the waiting list. At home I'm 45 for the paper book. Which ever I get first is the one I'll read.
This site has been invaluable and I thank everyone for their polite and courteous help. I never would have thought to look up the Boston Library without the tip. I may never have to buy a book again, ebook or paper. Dave W |

Dave--Glad you found the Boston Library links useful! I love having library access! I live in Sacramento and have gotten cards for quite a few libraries here in Northern California. Sometimes I think it's almost as much fun looking for books as reading!

You may be interested to hear of my little tale. I have a few computers. My desktop runs freebsd which is a unix variant. My laptop USED to use vista (it came with the machine), it now used ubuntu_9.10 (if you don't know, this is a linux variant which is also a unix variant). It's a toshiba A300 satellite pro. I had similar issues to you under vista (do not disconnect) which were resolved either by rebooting the machine, rebooting the reader, or ignoring completely. I also had issues where the sony stuff would autoload on plugin (I didn't want it to do this as i was using calibre). But if you're using vista, typically you'll shrug it off with "well, it's vista". There are lots of little issues like this. Broken wi-fi drivers,USB not starting or shutting down properly, broken access rights management, slow on a fast machine, 32bit, stuff like that. The final straw for me happened when vista got hit by a trojan which, although various AV software can identify, none can remove at the time of writing. So i grabbed an iso of ubuntu from another machine, shut down the infected one and booted to the iso and grabbed all the stuff i wanted to keep, put onto a removable non-windows disk, installed ubuntu to the machine, installed amongst other things, calibre. A well maintained unix machine is nowhere near as vulnerable to trojans as the equivalent windows machine, mostly down to how file ownership works. Ubuntu is very easy to keep up-to-date, calibre and usb mounting/dismounting work great, too. The sony software is gone, and there are no more 'do not disconnect' messages, and I'm running in 64bit ![]() ![]() |

Ubuntu comment
Thanks for the story. It makes me feel better knowing that I'm not the only one with those problems. I'm familiar with Ubuntu and have tried a boot CD with it just as a demo. It is a nice OS, but I am skeptical that it will be able to run all my applications. I have tons of shareware, freeware, and commercial applications. These include digital image editors, sound editors, backup programs, image viewers, and others. Just re-installing all those apps under a new operating system would be more that I'd want to tackle. MS claims that, if you start with Vista and upgrade to Windows 7, your applications will transfer. I sure hope they aren't just kidding. Also, the computer that has Vista is a notebook with a 320 GB drive. So setting it up to dual boot could chew up too much space on the HD.
This is getting a little away from the book reader, but it does relate because of the problems it creates with the Sony reader. Dave W |

Dave as i read your thred i new i would find some answers because it is exactly what i am going threw here is what i did after reading all the posts here and it seems to allow things to run much smoother.
1. first i removed the Sony software, now every time i plug in the reader it trys to install the software i just close it(I would however like to know how to stop this). 2. Now because the calabre still did not recognize my reader unless the sony software was ruing i reinstalled it and selected PRS-500 insted of touch even tho i am running the PRS-600. poof worked great I hope this helps if anyone knows how to stop Sony from trying to install that would be great. |

Problem loading Sony reader library
Quote:
The reader library should install directly from your reader when you plug it into your computer. Is the computer recognizing the reader and connecting to it? You need to tell us exactly what you are doing and what is happening on both the reader and your computer when you plug the reader to a USB port. I'm sure that, with enough information, someone here can help you. To tell you my story, I have stopped using Reader Library and use Calibre instead. However, I still have the Sony software on my notebook (An HP Pavillion) so I can access the Sony book store. What was happening to me is that I would delete a few books from the reader and the Sony Library would try to resync the next time I plugged in the reader, but could never compete the process and just hang up. I started another thread to ask for help and was given a procedure that required deleting all books from the reader and then reloading them from my computer or from the Sony store. That worked, but was too much trouble to go through every time I wanted to clean up my reader. Calibre doesn't have any syncing problems because the user does it manually. So here is what I do now. I use the Sony software only to buy books and do that with my reader disconnected. I have the reader library set to not automatically open when I connect the reader. After buying a book from any seller, including Sony, and closing Reader Library, I open Calibre and load the book(s) into it. I then connect my reader and transfer the books to it. If I delete a book from Calibre or from the reader, there are no problems whatsoever. The procedure for loading a library book is more involved because of the DRM the library uses. I have to use Adobe Digital Editions to download the library book before loading it into Calibre. If anyone wants more details on the exact procedure, let me know. Or, if anyone knows a way to borrow library books directly from Calibre, please tell me how. If you start a new thread, please email me or leave a pointer here because I rarely visit this forum anymore. I'm currently enjoying reading books on my Sony and really have no issues except the somewhat involved process for borrowing a book. Dave W |
