Yes; there's a menu item for disabling the accelerometer.

I you do this, is there a menu option to change the orientation manually, say if you want to flip it over and hold it in your other hand?

I've not tried it, but I believe that it you disable to accelerometer, the screen will stay in its current orientation, so you'd need to enable the accelerometer, turn the device the way that you wanted it, and then disable the accelerometer.

Provided, however, you hold the Opus pretty much upright, the accelerometer is not sensitive at all. It only becomes so if the device is near the horizontal.

Thanks... been thinking of getting a 5incher and the Pocketbook and Opus look the best to me... but they are also each @ $100 more than the Sony and Hanlin models, I'm not quite sure why.

It does take about 40 seconds for the device to open. I don't want to do that too often, so I set the turn-off at 1 hour.
In other places on MR the claim is that it boots in 15 seconds. So which one is correct or does it still depend on the number of books in the top directory?

18s from pressing the power button to it being ready to use. That's with about 200 books on it, all in folders named by author.

FYI, the Opus is $50 more than the Sony or Pocket Pro (which is $199 through this month only AFAIK) if you get it from Books On Board. $40 more if you count the $10 in reward dollars.

If you want to read ePub books on it, I think personally that it's worth paying the extra for. The ePub implementation on the Opus is considerably better than the Sony, and rather better than the Pocket Pro (especially in terms of hyperlink handling).

Thanks... Hadn't you decided to return your Opus?

Still I can by 5-10 books with $50.

I did return it, but let them send me a replacement. I like the new one much better and plan on keeping it. I had a PP too and returned that for a refund.

Yep, $50 ($40) buys a lot of books.

BoB and Astak both have a 14 day return policy (more info on their sites) so you can try them out a bit. Not sure about the Pocketbook 360 as I haven't seen it for sale anywhere other than Pocketbook's site so far. It does look nice.

Since my Opus takes forty seconds, with 650 books aboard, there seems to be a relation between the number of books ane start-up time.

I'm really not bothered by those forty seconds. I set the auto-extinction time at one hour... so I so the device doesn't shut down except when I'm really not using it.
