script it away
Just half an hour ago I finally got tired of reading the word, so I installed Greasemonkey for Firefox, and modified the WebVocab script to replace all occurrences of "electronic-book-reading-device" with "electronic-book-reading-device" while browsing MobileRead. That way I don't see the word, keep the intended meaning while reading the site, and don't trouble anyone else with my linguistic preferences.

I prefer "Elektronika libro leganto", or ELL for short.

I understand when English borrows words from a language of the country where things are 1. Invented 2. Mostly produced. Make sense.
Siesta - born and majorly used in Latin Amerika. Tea - originate and majorly produced - China Chai - originated and major producer - India etc Liceuse - not invented and not produced at all as far as I know - France. When France will give the world of ebooks something more then a word for table I think we should talk. |

Actually, "french fries" is supposed to be a Belgian invention (and supposedly the word means "frenched", not "of France").

Actually, they gave us pommes frites. We're the ones that insisted on noting who did it before us.
Don't forget champagne, avenues and bon mots. And a million other things. Don't mock the French! If they took it all back, we'd be poorly-spoken clods drinking beer in cramped alleys. Oh, wait... m a r |

Actually, quite a bit of the English language is based on French, with most of the transitions having been made between the XIIth and the XVIth centuries. For the fun, here are some of the words you have used in the posts of this subject which come from French originally, in order of appearance:
Device, personally, common, sounds, foreign, pronounce, certainly, general, regards, ambiguity, acceptance, language, partially, noticed, bandit, piece, proportion, completely, annoying, tempted, figured, place, modified, supposedly... |

It's one of those words that feels if I actually say ior type it, I will have to clean up the mess afterwards.
It's fun and has been such since, I think it was Zelda(?) who tagged her readers with Liseuse. I learned a new word after looking it up and ever since it's just been fun...I have a sense some folks are taking the fun out of the whole thing and taking it far too seriously as if one or the other is somehow diminished based on if the word is used or not. People, it is JUST A WORD. If you like it...use it...if not then don't...and I still think it is something located next to the bidet...or if you do it in public you better clean it up afterwards. ![]() Just lighten-up already fer-goodness sakes!! PS: Just like Danny Costanzo (the character played by Billy Crystal)in the movie Running Scared "...I eat donuts because I can't say that word...." "Croissant?" "....boom that's the one..." (might not be exact for the nit pickers but it is a JOKE...and the point comes across ![]() Last edited by brecklundin; 09-24-2009 at 04:42 AM. |
