Well, the book has illustrations. Some of the illustrations are large drop caps at the start of each chapter, some are in-line wit the text and some are full-page illustrations. And then there's the font for the text, especially the italics used in the Chapter headings...

Essentially, the custom ePub will be a lot prettier. I'm not sure how much, since I haven't tried out Smashword's auto conversion yet.

As for the book itself, I mention it in my signature. Currently it's available in paperback at Amazon.

I already checked into it at that other site. I like the large drop caps and that little mouse you have used as your avatars..

Uploads with illustrations are being added to the MR ebooks as members get better at formatting with them. It will be interesting to see how the illustrations come out in your book.

Good Luck! It will be great to have it more widely available.

They have a very easy to follow style guide that helps you prep your books for multiple platforms. I use it for prepping for Kindle as well.

Just do itttttttttttt and get it out there.

And I've just got back the final bit of copyright licensing paperwork I needed, now I just need to get font licences, finish off the Mobipocket version, get payment options on my web site, and upload to resellers....

But the ebook is definitely going to appear! Hooray!

The ePub version is finished except for, perhaps, some final tweaks to acknowledgements in the Colophon. I'm just waiting on the font licences. (Yes, it's an ePub with embedded fonts!)

Make sure, pdurrant, that the fonts' licensors are aware of the specifics of your intended use. It is not entirely clear that ePub's "embedding" mechanisms would unambiguously qualify as "embedding" as opposed to "distribution". And, of course, this sort of things are best not to find out by way of an unexpected cease and desist, or, worse yet, a lawsuit.

I have made very sure of that. Note that I'll be using the Adobe obfuscation method, since no-one seems to support the IDPF's method yet!

That's as good a step in the right direction as can be expected. And if you were clear in your licensing requests, all should be good.

The formatting leaves a bit to be desired - the result of it having to go through their automatic conversion routine, which still needs a bit of work, IMO.

The HTML, PDF, and ePub aren't too bad. The LRF is not optimal - page breaks after the chapter headings. The Mobi is very bad - no images at all!

But, it's done. Hopefully eventually Smashwords will have either much improved conversion, or a way to tweak the results of the conversion.

I have a /beautiful/ epub version - but it'll have to wait until the weekend to go up at my site.

I'm not sure it's worth doing a PDF version at Lulu - the PDF at Smashwords is pretty good. My own is better of course! What do people think?

Oh - and a link! You can get 50% samples for free, so you can see how the formatting looks in the various versions.

So you can't just upload you're already formatted files? That stinks.

I can see the use for automatic conversion, but it'd be better to make it optional.
