Keep that in mind too, not everyone have the choice to check it for real in a store. Here in Holland the Sony machines are only sold by bol.com online since they have an exclusive contract with Sony.

So we have to do with reviews of people who actually used the machine and have first hand experience. And from what I read problems with the 600 are plenty, not only the glare, I am reading about freezing etc, and I can honestly say, having used the 300 for about a week, week and half, I had no problems with the device at all, except for the crappy software it comes with.

And since it was my first e-reader I wanted to make a very informed choice and thanks to everything I read here, the good and the bad, I decided to go with the 300, only wish it came with a bigger screen, although I don't really have a problem reading on it, just put the font size on medium or large, but bigger screen would have been a plus.

So let people voice their opinion even if it's negative because it sure helps people to make an honest choice between devices on user experience if they don't have the ability to check the device for themselves in stores.
I agree!

I used the device and it was not for me and I returned it. For others its the greatest thing since sliced bread (not sure why sliced bread is that cool, I have been told it is though) anyway if someone asks me, I would say, "pass", other would say go for it. Ultimately I think none would disagree that the display is not as good as the 505 (few are) and if that is important to you then you should pass or if you are able at least go see one for yourself. If like many others have said they value the touch features and the pdf zoom features than this may be your cup of Tea.

I find it fascinating how the discussion turns from the device and opinions about the device to opinions about the people who have opinions. I will bow out of the discussion when it comes to that - I respect eveyone's opinion as there is no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to personal taste.

and as Forest Gump once said "That is all I have to say about that..."

I'm actually contemplating buying a prs 505 now, since it has a bigger screen, and give the 300 as a gift to my brother. But I'm not sure yet. *grin* It's a lot of money to spend for me. I do love the 300 though, it's been pretty stable for me and good reading. I just like that with the 505 there are page turning buttons at the side of the device as I have small hands and sometimes even with the 300 it's difficult to reach the page turning button in the middle, especially when I'm reading in bed.

I'm personally pretty happy with the glare of the PRS-600. I've been reading on Palm devices for the past five years, so, in comparison, the Sony has almost no glare. I can't complain mainly because I'm so used to angling the reading device to avoid glare.

It's great that we all have such strong opinions about our devices, inspires for some banter.....nobody's wrong nobody's right, we each have our thresholds for what we are willing to DEAL with.

Remember a minute having fun appears to be quicker than a minute bored.....it's still a minute

People say the glare is a non-issue over and over also. That doesn't bother me. Sometimes apologists even claim the "glare" is not really even really true glare at all and that I'm using the word wrong. That IS annoying to me. Also people saying that other people are annoying for voicing their contrary opinions, is annoying.

I am not a picky person, hardly ever return anything, and was pretty sure I'd fall in line with the 600 lovers. I complain not for the sake of complaining, but because I wish there had been more of a preponderance of detractors before I bought mine. My criterion for a good device is one that allows you to forget you're using an ebook reader, and for me the shiny screened 600 fails that test relative to my Kindle. I find the glare, though not a deal breaker, is a distracting impediment to easy, comfortable reading in various lighting conditions which is not at ALL balanced by the gimmicky touchscreen functionality.

On the other hand, the loss of sharpness and contrast are slight and negligible to my eyes.

Giving an opinion is fine. Going into every single thread and repeating that opinion over and over -- even in threads that aren't on that topic -- is less acceptable IMO.

Especially since some of us remember two short months ago when one of those posters kept saying that Sony was pulling out of the E-book business, despite others who had inside info that Sony was releasing new models.

I personally seek out that outlandish glare. That's why I love my 700. I can read on it, shave with it by using it's mirror like surface, and using four of them, make a crude parabolic reflector for setting ants on fire... and pbooks!

The more glare the better I say!

In fact, the next time some bothersome poster goes from topic to topic complaining about the glare on an ereader device they have never actually used, I am gonna just laugh at them and then set them on fire with the mighty glare from my 700!

Try that with your non-glare ereader!

Can't wait for my touch screen PRS 900, I should be able to down airplanes with that thing!

I got a 600 and love it. Glare - I don't notice it until I fire up my old 500 and look at the screen. If I don't look at the 500, then I quickly forget the difference.

The glare doesn't seem to have stopped me reading in any conditions yet, thought I'm sure it will. The touch screen has meant that on a few docs I have been able to mark up typos and I'll go back and fix my source material, so next time I read that doc it is improved. While this isn't something I can imagine happening a lot, it is kind of useful. Also highlighting some quotes I like it very nice. Thus - the touch screen functionality, for me, is providing more benefit than the loss of some clarity (that I don't even notice most of the time).

Just thought I'd say.

Has anyone had trouble with their Sony600 freezing? I first one lasted 3 weeks before it froze. Sony sent me a reburbished one in place of the frozen one. I have had it for about4 weeks and it has frozen too. I am really aggravated with it. Help?

The 600 does freeze from time to time, but not frequently enough to be a nuisance. You just have to reset it (press reset and at the same time the power button, then release reset and push power button again). Didn't resetting it help? Why did you have to send it back?
And welcome to MR, by the way

Just stumbled over this thread and I must say, I just love the talk about opinions and the right and wrong thing and such

Opinions are just opinions. I wouldn't take any of them as an offence. There's no right, no wrong. The only device necessary for a person is the one which suits the persons needs.
I have a 505 which I love for its display. It has tradeoffs though. I passed it on to my wife and she's similarly enthusiastic about it as I am. I switched to the 600 for several reasons already explained. I love it for its features the 505 didn't have. It has other tradeoffs that the 505 didn't have ;-)

Ok, I also wanted to just give my 2 cent.

I think the glare is an issue and I HAVE used the device extensively. It's not a dealbreaker, but definitely an issue. And, as other people said, it's not the only one. The quality of the text is not as good as on the non-touch screen models.

I still love it though. I just hope Sony sorts these things out for the next models.

very cool stuff...
is this a joke? Last I heard meta-material in university labs are very much experimental. Furthermore, much of the invisibility shields are invisible only outside of the visible spectrum. So invisible to microwave, radar. But not to humans.

BRILLIANT !

I agree completely,

I've had my 600 for just 2 hours, and it's great,

I read every post, every review of all the Sony Readers

Then I bought it,

I've tested for glare, in as many light conditions as I can,

I'm as blind as a Bat, but i can manage the glare and the contrast with no problems whatsoever !

was late, but boy I'm having fun
