The Xournal app is not doing the "special" refreshes that the built in apps are doing. The eInk in your DR1000 and PRS-505 are identical. It's a software issue with how the screens are being redrawn.

its not only in xournal, also if i select a folder in the menu with the buttons and select another without open it, there is a ghost of the selection remaining to the previous one

All eInk ghosts, that's a normal part of the current technology. There are various ways that manufacturers do a refresh to help mitigate the problem. That's why devices do things like invert first and then draw the new page, etc. It's a trade off between slowing the page turning down versus reducing any noticeable ghosting.

If you loaded a third party app on your 505 that didn't do as thorough of a refresh as the built in apps, then it would ghost too.

I believe the menu is doing a partial screen refresh, which does not perform the steps that mitigate ghosting. It's a trade off between refresh speed versus ghosting. It's a software design decision.

When you turn a page there's a multi step refresh that helps get rid of the ghosting. When you select items in the menu it doesn't do that, so you see more ghosting (but it's quicker than a page turn).

do you guys see this also on you DR??

i made some photos

*ghosting on all pictures is much more visible on my DR than on the pics*

1. is directly after booting, where the logo is left in the middle as a ghost

2. after switching to another folder without open it

3. selected plain site in xournal, but lines were left as ghost (which is the most annoying ghost, any possibility to get a plain site when starting xournal as preset?)

4. written text

5. after marking and deleting the text (strongest ghosting, there should be nothing visible!!)

These all look completely normal to me.

I know the 505 has less ghosting in spite of having the same screen, and there is a good reason for it: the DR refresh speed is vastly better because it does less processing to eliminate ghosting.

Frankly, I prefer the DR's way. It is also meaningless to compare ghosting with the 505 with things like Xournal, because the PRS does not even run it, or anything remotely like it.

You usually see more ghosting on the DR when the DR has spent less time doing the screen update. So moving from one menu selection to another and erasing something you wrote in Xournal all have some ghosting because they needed to be immediately reflected onto the screen. I don't even think this is because of some flaw in the way Xournal was written (for the desktop), but something inherent to all eink screens. For instance, iRex's "scribble" function also ghosts when you erase. In other words, Xournal is doing the best it can, unless you want to wait 1-2 seconds for what you wrote to appear on the screen (some experimental versions of Xournal we tried actually did this).

That said, I would really prefer if the DR were more intelligent about its refreshes to reduce ghosting, such as right after booting up (the infamous iRex logo ghost). There are some things you could do to reduce ghosting while reading however.

The DR1000 has a few different ways (waveforms) to update its display. A rules based system (based on GTK widget redraws) decides when to refresh and which waveform to use. In Xournal is system probably fails to select the best waveform which leaves mid-tone grays. Strictly speaking this is not ghosting.

The other photo's do show a bit of ghosting. As Grimulkan said this is not unusual. His video is a great illustration of what is going on and how the DR differs from the PR505.
