Yes, life goes on. "This, too, must pass" is my motto for when things get tough. But I'll check out those books as well. I try to always keep at least one of the classics in my currently reading list. (At the moment, it's Essays, Civil and Moral & The New Atlantis by Francis Bacon from Vol. III of The Harvard Classics.)

Lots of votes for Pratchett! Thanks.

I've never been able to get into J.R.R. Tolkien. I've got nothing against him; I'm more of a science-fiction rather than fantasy lover.

Okay! More votes for Pratchett, Asprin & Zelazny.

I can't say I find Pratchett to be extremely funny, but his stuff is a decent read generally. I have quite a few paper versions, and I'm trying desperately to find the black cover editions locally.

Asprin's Myth stuff has so far been enjoyable for me (just first two books), but like some Pratchett, it's more smiling-amusing rather than hilarious. The Wodehouse stuff I've read so far (Blandings Castle stuff mostly) has been similarly smile-inducing.

Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series (at least the first two books) have gotten some chuckles out of me, though they're a different brand of comedy.

I did laugh out loud once or twice at Christopher Moore's "Lamb". I have other books of his that I'd like to dive into, but I'm always worried that I'll end up disappointed after a strong showing from Lamb.

This question on Amazon offers some interesting results that I haven't seen mentioned before, and would like to check out myself.

Zelazny is hard to find, but worth reading even if you have to go pbook.

JSWolf has a perfect Pratchet reading list posted on here somewhere, search for it (the list, not the chart, both of which are posted here). Of course, start with The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic, books 1 & 2 which sort of get the whole ball rolling. And it has Luggage.

Oooh - I forgot those. I'll second those, although they are a different style to Adams

Neil Gaiman. Not saying he is as good but he is definitely reminiscent of Douglas Adams - particularly Anansi Boys and Neverwhere.

ETA: Connie Willis too.

Literature-map also puts Stephen Hawking closest to P.G. Wodehouse.

Should be treated with a pinch of salt methinks!

Seems natural to me. I love Wodehouse and have one book by Hawking...

I think that I after having discovered Douglas Adams and Pratchett went on to Wodehouse. I think they are similar all three and I like them for approximately the same reasons.

Of course, but I've not read anything from Adams or Pratchett and the consensus on this thread is that Pratchett is the closest thing to Adams - the exact result of Literature-map. It must have some degree of accuracy, although I have no idea how it calculates its results.

Fair enough - and that one seems relatively appropriate I suppose.

I just tried again though and the nearest writer to Jean-Paul Sartre is, apparently, Gene Rodenberry

I am now fascinated by this and would challenge anybody to come up with two sets of less closely related writers than Wodehouse/Hawking and Sartre/Rodenberry.

I will go with Terry Pratchett, Robert Asprin (not his Thieves World stuff), and Piers Anthony (Xanth series).
