new version 6.12 does not start

Basically the problem is caused (only on XP) by some old .manifest files lying around in the calibre installation directory. So if you delete them, by uninstalling and then making sure taht C:\Program Files\calibre is deleted, you will be fine.

Kovid, Thanks for the prompt response!

Two questions --

1) For those of us with XP who have not yet tried to upgrad to 6.12, should we follow the procedure you specify in the quoteback...or should we only do this if the problem occurs?

2) Will the uninstall and deleting C:\Program Files\calibre run any risk of losing any data files?

Follow the procedure, i.e. uninstall, delete folder and then install new version.

No data is stored in the calibre install folder, unless you chose it as the folder for your library.

Kovid, With my XP system, I did what you said...did the uninstall of 6.11 and checked that there was no longer a calibre folder. Then I did install 6.12. It would not launch on my XP system...nothing happened, nothing launched!!

So I uninstalled 6.12 and reinstalled 6.11 which seems to work fine.

What should I do to get 6.12 operational?

Are there still any .manifest files in the folder

I'm on a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and I'm having the same problem.

If I just drag calibre 0.6.12 from the mounted dmg to my Applications folder and have it replace the older version of calibre, I can't get calibre 0.6.12 to work at all.

If I uninstall and delete the calibre related files, and then install 6.12, calibre will open with the wizard and everything goes smoothly. But I cannot get it to open a second time. I have to uninstall calibre and reinstall it to use it again.

I'd appreciate any help to fix this. But for the time being I reinstalled 6.11 so I can use cailbre.

ETA: Nevermind! I got it to work, I just had to delete this: net.kovidgoyal.calibre.plist then do a fresh install of 6.12. Everything seems to working fine now.

On a fresh windows xp install with no previous, Calibre won't start up either.

Kovid, With 6.11 uninstalled there is no C:\Program Files\calibre.

With 6.11 installed, there are a number of *.manifest files in the plugins folder.

Just delete the .manifest files.

Some of these files look like they might be useful, e.g. related to certain ebooks.

Yes, the manifest files are not related to ebooks (there is no user data in the plugins folder)

For those of you having problems on new XP installs, install the build of calibre from here:

and then in a terminal run

calibre-debug -g

and post the output

i have deleted everything in C:\Program Files\calibre and done what you have suggested three times and i now get the same as below.

Is there a way i can get version 11 until this bug is fixed?
