My favorite cookbooks are series called "Gooseberry Patch". They collect recipes from all over (thought it does seem like most are from the American Midwest) and bring them together and each book has a different theme. The recipes aren't from professional chefs but everyday people who understand that most people don't have a lot of time for cooking.

Moosewood has some really great veggie dishes. In fact, it was Moosewood's recipes that made me realize that vegetarian cooking could actually be delicious! I remember when it first came out... I was almost afraid of it. It might just be the most influential cookbook of our generation!

My favorite cookbook is Tandoor Chef Chicken Tikka Masala. Without fear of violating copywrite, I will transcribe:

1. Peel back corner of entree
2. Heat in microwave on high for 3 minutes
3. Remove entree cover and stir rice and sauce
4. Heat on high for 2 more minutes
5. Leave in microwave for 2 minutes
6. Stir and enjoy

All my favorite cookbooks end like that! Ah, the joy of cooking!

Unfortunately (for you) my favourite cookbook authors only write in Danish, but I can recommend this one: The Scandinavian Cookbook.

Great suggestion, I like books like this. It's important to understand not only how, but also why.

My current favorite:

How to cook everything vegetarian. Mark Bittman.

Two new ones for me, that I'm really enjoying (I'm on a slow-cooking kick right now):

135 best vegetarian slow cooker recipes. Judith Finlayson
Fresh from the vegetarian slow cooker. Robin Robertson.

Old standbys:

The joy of cooking. Rombauer(s). (Well, duh!)
The vegetarian epicure. Anna Thomas.
Simply vegetarian. (You probably can't find this -- no author, but wow, great and easy recipes. Publisher: Crystal Clarity.)

My favorite old hippie cookbook, which I keep mainly for the picture on the back of the book jacket, in which three women in long dresses and buns are gathered around a wooden table drinking tea (such a period piece!): Laurel's kitchen. Laurel Roberson, Carol Flinders, Bronwen Godfrey.

I skimmed through it a couple of times, it's interesting and contains a lot of useful info on types of food (rare vegetables, exotic food), but I'm never used their recipe, their not that appealing, IMHO

I love Nigella, she cooks the way I like to: lusciously, following her instinct and taste of luxury more then normal standards. Her recipes are an ode to the senses.

I have a couple hundred cook books, but those I could not do without:
-The Five Rose Cook Book, perfect for basic baking recipes;
-Pickles and Preserves, by Marion Brown (I have the 1955 edition that belonged to my grand-dad, and it's so incredibly useful);
-Canada's Best Slow Cooker Recipes, by Donna-Marie Pye;
-Twelve Months of Monastery Soups, by Victor-Antoine D'avila Latourrette, good and often really soothing recipes.

I'm also a fan of The Classic Zucchini Cookbook, that I don't have, but I copied recipes from my mom's copy. In fact, I really like themed cookbooks, like The Ultimate Potato Book and the oh so delirious Bakers Best Chocolate Cookbook.

And I also like the Chocolate and Zucchini site, held by Clotilde Dusoulier, a fun and creative chef, with easy recipes.

My favourites are anything by Elizabeth David. I've got her complete works. I probably use her French Provincial Cookery most often.

For baking, Marguerite Patton has some useful books, and I've found her recipes more reliable than Delia Smith's. Mary Berry also has some good baking recipe books.

I've got about a thousand cookery and household management books, but will be having a cull soon.

I guess we have few members from Hawaii or the islands of Micronesia (Guam, Saipan, Yap, Rota, etc...) as no one has mentioned the one cookbook found at most supermarket check-out counters in this places;

"100 All Time Favorite 'Spam' Recipes!"

(Hawaii is the #1 ingestor of our favorite canned meat product, with the various Pacific islands coming in a close second. I used to see so many people buying case-loads of 'Spam' at the Cost-Co on Guam. It was so popular you could actually order Spam dishes in many local family restaurants! "Denny's" served a 'Fried Spam and Egg' breakfast!)

I love Frogmore Stew (aka Low Country Boil). The Lees' recipe is here: http://www.mattleeandtedlee.com/recipes.php

He wrote the short story the episode was based on.
Anyone remember the Simpsons' Halloween episode where Bart and Lisa find a book on the aliens' ship titled "How to Cook Humans" but dust was covering part of the cover and it really was "How to Cook For Humans", then more dust was removed to reveal "How to Cook Forty Humans" and finally "How to Cook For Forty Humans."
