In case anyone comes looking, I wanted to let you know my success. First of all, Sony was very helpful, but calling Reader support 877-263-2863. The use Logmein to walk you through removing stuff that really doesn't belong deep in your system. Boo. It's all DRM, located in your System or User library. Another Boo. Anyway, there is a file called "DRM" that needs to be removed. That worked for me, and now everything seems to be fine.
