Indeed, while lack of availability and terrible pricing are in some ways just rationalisations for piracy, it does amaze me that publishers don't go for the easiest option to yank those arguments out from under people with a simple policy that when anything is newly out in paperback then at worst there should also be an ebook version at the same price or ideally slightly lower.

You presume all libraries have all books. Which is never the case. Second, I've no idea where to find a library in my country that does in ebooks.

I've notice a disturbing trend too at Amazon - many/most/a heck of a lot of newly published SciFi and mysteries are being launched in Kindle format at $13.74 - $14.74, or thereabouts (see The City and the City), even if the books don't have a hardcover version first. The price then SLOWLY falls, often up & down, to the coveted 9.99 point. It's as if:
1. Amazon is testing the pricing waters to find a higher price point than 9.99 that buyers will accept. or 2. The Amazon computers have a will of their own, or 3. Who has any idea what is going on there? |

I'm sure Amazon, as well as the others are trying to find the price point, but it's all a trade off between convenience and price and market demand etc.
When I can buy The Year's Best SF used for .50 + $2 shipping compared to $10 for the E-Book or $15.00 new + shipping or $15 at my local bookstore+tax then there are a lot of options that really boil down to how bad so I want the convenience of the Ebook and am I willing to wait to get it from the used third-party seller..... |
