Maybe Sony sold something to Russia or Iran too but we don't know about it yet...

Pink elephants may fly overhead and honk, too.

Toshiba Machine got caught selling multi-axis milling machines to Russia, in defiance of US, Japanese, European, and SEATO laws and regulations, fruaudulently listing them as 2-axis machines. They were debarred for 3 years. I won't buy from a company that commits fraud and puts short term profit over nuclear annihilation. I view them as untrustworthy.

Jack Tingle

You can, and I don't have to. There are quality ebook devices available from reputable companies. Toshiba is NOT a reputable company and not everyone realizes how significant their greed crime was. So you keep sweeping it under the rug and others will keep exposing it. Buy from a reputable company that has normal corporate greed, and avoid Toshiba completely.

Every computer manufacturer should then be boycotted. As nearly any system has been used to create weapons.

And why is selling to Russia bad? It's only bad because you are not Russian. Would you be boycotting Toshiba if they were selling to the us with the us having the same intent? Because if not they your just an hypocryt.

Flame Off!

As the originator of this thread, I prefer that we stick to the topic and focus on the relative technical merits of the Toshiba JournE tablet.

Those interested in Toshiba's documented defense technology sharing violations, please start another thread. I don't quibble with the facts you've stated but hijacking this forum to discourage anyone from buying Toshiba products is inappropriate. Thank you.

Let's move on.

I'm sorry I didn't post something sooner. My work schedule is frenetic and erratic (just like me) so I don't always have the time to keep up to date with the various threads where I'm posting.

As for the Toshiba JournE, here is an article covering the Archos 5 vs. the JournE: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/technol...5875-21678484/.

The key quote in the above link is "...Archos manages to blow Toshiba out of the water."

My hesitation about the Archos 5 is all the complaints on the Web about Archos customer service, support, and extra-cost items.

I've never purchased an Archos as a result and I was perfectly willing to plunk down $ for the relatively unknown SmartDevices Q5 and Q7.

The Q5 and Q7 have their share of problems but eletroworld has been very responsive overall.

Have you seen the video review of the Android version of the Archos 5 ? http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/15/a...ut-of-android/

Thanks for the link. The videos are impressive.

With the use of Android on the Archos 5 and Windows 7 on the Archos 9pctablet, Archos has made it back to my "maybe" list along with the Toshiba JournE, the post-N900 Nokia tablet, the mythical Apple tablet, the Viliv X70, etc.

I'd like to hear what Chippy and JKK have to say, too, once retail versions are available because I want a device I can extend and modify. In part, that's what makes me happy with the Q5 and Q7.

Android on the SmartDevices has been in experimenters' hands for a while and it will be interesting to see what comes of it.

There's a short video of Android running on a Q7 http://www.dailymotion.com/user/maka...g-android_tech He said his SD card was really slow so that might account for the lag.

Thanks for the link. The experimental port of Android seems a bit sluggish on the Q7.

Back to the focus of this thread.

The Toshiba JournE tablet may be getting some direct competition from SmartDevices with its new "V" type MID due out in October.

The JournE has HDMI and supports WMA, MPEG 4, H.264, DivX and WMV.

The V also has HDMI output and does MKV/H.264, RMVB, MPEG 4, FLV, VC-1, WMV, MPEG2.

What I know about the V from SmartDevices is listed over at a new thread for this device here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57080.

I'm hoping that the V will be less expensive than the JournE.
