Correct. However, eReader works under Wine, and ADE and MobiPocket Desktop partially work under Wine (I don't know about MS Reader). Only ADE (and MS Reader) require a Desktop application to download ebooks.

There have been news reports that B&N is working on a native Linux Desktop reader for eReader.

ADE is an interesting case, because the mobile ADE SDK does run under Linux and the Sony Library viewer appears to implement the mobile ADE SDK on Windows and Mac Desktops. So Adobe could easily release a Linux Desktop version of the viewer, but the sticking point is the downloading and registration parts. If the Sony Daily Edition will be able to download DRMed Adobe ebooks wirelessly, then why isn't Adobe releasing a Linux Desktop viewer that can do the same?

Adobe doesn't want to put the time and money into it. They had started work on a version of DE for linux years ago, but scrapped it. Ebook sales are a small market, and they feel it isn't worth the investment to cater to an even smaller set of people.
