I live in EU and I want to buy from EU, so that I wouldn't need to pay customs.

PS: updated a bit my profile.

Hello

You can if you are a company or an independent professional.
If you are a normal consumer you can not, you have always to pay VAT.

Best regards,

I'm from the UK and bought my 505 in Jan 08 from www.bhphotovideo.com

Shipping wasn't cheap, but it was worth it.

That is correct. If you buy within the EU, the seller's VAT rate applies in the majority of cases (basically, unless the seller is a very large company which is VAT registered in the buyer's country, too, in which case it's the VAT rate in the buyer's country which is applied).

The only circumstance is which VAT cannot be charged is if the buyer is a VAT-registered company.

It depends on how much they are selling to a country and not on if the they are registered (maybe they have to be registered if they sell to much). For example Amazon UK that sells a lot to Sweden have to charge swedish VAT (which is much higher that UK VAT on book) on all books they sell to Sweden.

The cheapest is to buy from the UK. This avoids customs, and UK prices are cheaper than mainland Europe. I bought for my wife on Ebay.co.uk.

The other option is to get someone in the US to buy and ship one to you. Declared value should be below customs limit of your country.

The maximum declared value (enabling you to avoid customs duties) for whole EU is:

1. 22 EUR if ordered from a company,
2. 45 EUR if it's a "gift" from a natural person.

I am not sure that is true. I got my first reader from the US and it was declared at $80. I paid no customs.

^ The customs and VAT are two different things, as Tompe said.

If the VAT would be over 10€ you'll have to pay them --> so I can calculate that electronics and such where we (in Finland) have 22% the order can be max 45€ (including shipping) to avoid VAT.

The limit for customs duties 150€ if I recall correctly. So any order less than 150€ but more than 45€ I pay VAT, but no customs.

Which is why I prefer to buy things within EU. No hassle with custom duties and the VAT is already included in the price.

sorry to bump this thread again but am also looking to get a PRS-505.

I currently own a PRS-600 and was happy until a colleague of mine showed me his PRS-505 and now I want one of these.

I would prefer to buy it from an online shop rather that ebay if possible if anyone has any ideas that would great. I´ve tried some of the links in this thread but none seem to be available.

I´m based in Spain but would like the English verison if possible.

You might have some difficulties buying it from an online shop now as sony no longer produces these readers.
I eventually gave up and bought mine from ebay.co.uk .
