The "sudo apt-get update" worked first time, seemed to download a bunch of files. I tried it again and it didn't download, just showed a list of the files, as I assume they were already there from the first download.

Tried "sudo apt-get amarok" again, still no joy. If I enter just "sudo apt-get" it shows me a list of commands and options, so it seems the problem is with "amarok". It's as if it doesn't understand "amarok" or "amarok" isn't available.

I've checked the spelling etc, and I'm sure I'm entering it as you've shown.

Don't know where to go from here.
Try "sudo apt-get gnome-apt" this is a graphical package installer i.e. it shows you a list of available apps (with descriptions) that you click on to install. We can then try installing amarok from there.

p.s. excuse me asking but just double-checking , are you typing in the " " along with amarok i.e. "amarok" or amarok (should be without)

No, I'm not using the quotes. In fact I'm now trying "sudo apt-get install amarok".
It's doing something but shows it has about 30 minutes remaining. I hope I haven't stuffed it up by doing this.

Will advise what happens when this is finished. I'll also try "sudo apt-get gnome-apt" if necessary.

Thanks.

DOH of course INSTALL , jeez I'm just so dumb Shouldn't rush my replies
(Don't forget it when you do the gnome-apt)
See, you're learning already The time is dependent on your internet connection, seems yours is a bit slow.

It always turns out to be something simple, but it's not over yet I'm afraid.

It finished downloading and then tried to unpack the packages. (seemed to be a lot of them).

It has these messages...

"* Restarting Hardware abstraction layer hald"
"restart failed. Errors were encountered while processing"
"E: Directory '/var/log/apt/' missing"
"E : Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"

Also further up the list I noticed "No space left on device"

The Q7 has now locked up and fails to repond at all. Had to press the reset button. Now when it starts up it shows a message "Xsession: warning: unable to write to tmp/; X session may exist with an error"

Looks like one step forward, 2 steps back.

Do you have an SD card in your device?

Yes I have an SD card installed, it's 1GB. It shows as having 996MB free, whereas rootfs (is this a folder name in the device?) shows Free space 0 Byte (Total 648.1 MB)

I'm afraid you have run out of internal memory, not good Is there a file called soft.img on your SD card? This is where your Q7 should load new apps to because it knows there is not much space on the device. Looks like you are going to have to re-flash your Q7.

No file by that name on the SD card. Will re-flash now.
After the re-flash, I suppose I should try doing everything all over again.
I'm amazed by how much trouble a "simple" install seems to be.

nation, I'm trying to install rdesktop but after modifing the sources.list and installing amarok I'm getting an error: "dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem, after doing that I get, dpkg: requested operation requires superuser privilege. Any thoughts?.

You have the latest ver 4.0 for your re-flash? Before you do any more installing run 'GDebi Apt Software Manager' Click Start Icon, System Tools, GDebi Apt Software Manager, after it starts you can quit it, this should create the soft.img file on your SD card. If it does, it should then be safe to do the Amarok install.

Fixed it by typing sudo after dpkg.

Ok, did everything you said and soft.img file created.

This time everything went well until I got this "E: Directory '/var/log/apt/' missing". Q7 then locked up. Pressed the reset button, booted ok but no amarok in "Sound & Video".

I checked for the directory '/var/log/apt/' but the 'apt' directory isn't there and I can't create it, I get an error message "The new file cannot be created!"

I'm off to bed now as it's 2am here. Thanks again for your assistance.

The "E: Directory /var/log/apt/" error is not a problem. Normally linux keeps a log of the 'apt-get jobs' and stores them there, but due to the small memory left on the device this was deactivated, hence the error. I not sure what else to say right now but as you will be up long before me on Monday I recommend you read this thread as it explains more about storing/running apps from an SD card; http://www.ill-logix.com/forum/viewt...=28&p=605#p605 (you will need to register) + if you can, try and get hold of a larger SD card because if you want to install more apps, you are probably going to need one.

I did what you said. Now have a 4GB SD card installed, made a 2GB file as described in the thread you said I should read.

I tried to download and install amarok again but got a message to say that amarok is up to date. (wording may not be 100% correct, as I'm working from memory now). This suggests to me that amarok is installed...somewhere.

Did some research and dowloaded/installed a utility that lists all your installed applications. Amarok doesn't show up on the list.

I give up.

I'm not quiting! Because of the running out of memory problem I guess it's got a little confused. Now you have the bigger SD card and the larger memory allocation, try this; "sudo apt-get --purge remove amarok" followed by "sudo apt-get install amarok"
There is no reason now why this won't work (hides behind sofa)
