EXCELLENT book. I'm telling all my family to read it (if they listen to me!). One editting error to beware of: somewhere in the process of becoming an "e-book" they seem to have erased the word "book". Everywhere. I've contacted the author and listed all the instances that I found -- they hope to fix it this weekend. But if you come to a sentence that doesn't make sense, try inserting the word BOOK.

But *do* read it. Very good.

ePub file is, essentially, a zip archive containing a bunch of flat text files. Unzip the file, use any text editor. Both vim and emacs have capable xml/xhtml support. Or go with the HTML editors, Bluefish, Quanta, Screem. Did I mention Eclipse and its XML development environment?

Add to that perl+HTML:Parser for scripting, or take the Python route...

Ah, um. That'll be my fault. The moral of the story is, don't accidentally hit the Replace All button in the brief seconds after correcting the last mistake and hitting the Save As PDF button.

Corrected versions will be going up as soon as I've found all the missing words.

Apart from that, you're right, it *is* an excellent book. My family and friends are reading it too.

But I'm not starting with an epub file -- I'm trying to end up with epub file from a .doc file. So without knowing exactly how the "bunch of flat files" is put together (like bananas? like grapes? ) none of these programs would be much use, even if I *had* any HTML coding wisdom, which I don't.

Well, if the intention is to avoid exposure to the complexities of the format, then you need automated and pre-packaged solution for conversion(calibre), not "decent ePub editor".

IMHO, dedicated ePub tools (like Sigil) can help in the beginning by automating some of the steps, but sooner or later you will have to understand (x)HTML code and the structure of ePub publication. It is easy, this tutorial (or one of the others found on the net) covers the basic of the creation of ePub, XHTML we share with the Web designers and is covered in excellent "w3school" courses, offering not only a guidance, but also a chance to practise. IDPF specs, Adobe's own "EPUB Best practices Guide, combine that with a capability to copy elements from already existing ePub's, or use results of Calibre's processing as a start point... Just dive in.

Except for Adobe's Indesign, I am unaware of any other ePub tool that exists on Windows or Mac, but not on Linux.

I don't think Atlantis Word Processor is available for Linux (or Mac for that matter) and it seems to make pretty good ePubs.

I've produced a version in lrf format (with pictures/photos, notes and TOC) for my personal use, using BookDesigner. I would like to share it with everybody here, but first of all I want to make sure I'm not infringing any policies, copyrights, etc.

The changes I made to the original book are as follows:
- Added links from the body to the glossary.
- Changed orientation and size of some of the photographs.
- Minor enhancements to some images.

I don't know if this is againts the CC license.

I am quite pleased with the result (as seen in my PRS-505).

If everything is Ok, I can also produce an ePub version using Calibre.

That's free to SHARE, as in distribute. NOT free to ALTER and distribute, as in changing format or anything else.

I am working on epub and mobi versions, with images, with the permission of the author. The book is already available in pdf with images and on Manybooks.net and Feedbooks without images in multiple file formats.

The versions I'm working on will probably be available in another week or two.

Thats not true, but I won't belabor the point.

I also suspect you don't want the work you've done superseded by someone else...

What I said is true. Please tell me where it says you have a right to change the work and redistribute it. Point of fact is says "You may NOT alter, transfer, or build upon this work."

That's the content...not the wrapper; i.e. the file format.

So here is what the CC website says (since you are interested in belaboring the point):

http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Freq...sked_Questions

Quote:
What are the terms of a Creative Commons license?

The key terms of the core suite of Creative Commons licenses are: Attribution, NonCommercial, NoDerivatives and ShareAlike. These license elements are succinctly described as follows:

Attribution. You let people copy, distribute, display, perform, and remix your copyrighted work, as long as they give you credit the way you request. All CC licenses contain this property.

NonCommercial. You let people copy, distribute, display, perform, and remix your work for non-commercial purposes only. If they want to use your work for commercial purposes, they must contact you for permission.

ShareAlike. You let people create remixes and derivative works based on your creative work, as long as they only distribute them under the same Creative Commons license that your original work was published under.

NoDerivatives. You let people copy, distribute, display, and perform only verbatim copies of your work — not make derivative works based on it. If they want to alter, transform, build upon, or remix your work, they must contact you for permission.
Nobody has changed, altered, or remixed the content. Unless Pablo wasn't forthcoming in what he said, all he did was change its wrapper. That's permissible under copy, distribute and display.
