You know, world wars have been started over more trivial issues than confusing the Dutch with the German language. There was this one guy who invaded Poland, and this other who shot an archduke. Trivial stuff.

doesn't dutch have umlauts ? (perhaps they have another name). french does, although we call them "tréma". i do know a few dutch words : "'s-hertogenbosch", "sneeksnits", "oer dier ! dis treins warboel en arend", "brood kaas".

granted, there are no umlauts in those words.

We call it "trema" too. We are losing the habit of using it. I blame US keyboards
Technically an umlaut shifts the sound, the trema does not (at least in dutch), but indicates that a vowel should be pronounced apart from the letter which precedes it. So they are not the same thing.

""sneeksnits", "oer dier ! dis treins warboel en arend""

What?

those are all words i learned when i travelled around the netherlands lo these many years ago. sneeksnits, if memory serves, was the name of a town we stopped in, and i thought it was a funny word so i wrote it down. as for that other phrase, it was graffitied in a train, and i thought it was hilarious so i wrote *it* down as well. (i'm just guessing it means "oh dear ! this trains wobbling around !") i can usually tell the difference between german and dutch ; dutch seems to me to be somewhere in between german and english (although, i should say, i know very little german, even at the time i knew the most) and i found it pretty easy to understand a lot of basic stuff (brood kaas for instance was quite obvious to me without even thinking about it. )

aha ! so it really is a tréma you have ! that's how it works in french too !

(oh, and US keyboards are the devil's tools. or possibly the actual devil.)

"Umlaut" is a very cool word (like "ramekin" and "galangal"). I think I'll put it on The List.

Our main fridge is a Fisher and Paykel. This one, actually, or one very much like it:

It's okay. I can't remember why we bought it, as we were not fond of F&P's attempts at anything other than washing machines at the time (work had a fridge and dishwasher made by them, and they were both crap). It's been fine though, with only one minor problem where the icemaker stopped making ice, which turned out to be a faulty part in our model which F&P were only replacing if it happened to break. Fortunately ours did so during the warranty period.

We won't be replacing our existing F&P oven with another. Twice I've asked them for support on it, and twice they've just ignored me (after confirming receipt of my emails). Fark 'em if they're not interested in support. I'll buy a Smeg instead (probably - they've always been good to us).

Cheers,
Marc

I know of a town Sneek. It's in the northern part of the country. The other sentence makes even less sense...

Pfff, and a whole bread of cheese! That's a lot...

that sounds right. i think we went through there after den haag. i could be mistaken. maybe it was sneek-snits ? i don't know. this was a loooong time ago, did i mention that ? like, more than 15 years.

not so much. just a little bread with cheese. i used to buy them in bars for lunch.
