Well, IMHO, Sony fell way short of a Kindle DX challenger. Its limited 3G still leaves readers requiring a PC, as does the Library Finder software, etc. (Although igorsk is probably hacking on this even as I write). PDF support is still questionable. And, launching only a touch screen model, with known issues in decreased contrast/readability, won't challenge the DX screen.

Plus, the late arrival at Xmas misses the text book market.

The DX is far from perfect, but the Sony Daily Reader seems to be a hurried attempt to get something/anything on the market before year end to keep their foot in the door.

Why is the 3G limited? I thought that you could access whatever you wanted but you had to pay for the connection if you accessed something that was not the Sony shop.

"The Press Release says that there won't be any 3G download cost, but it very much sounds like the only place you can go over 3G is Sony's ebookstore, so that will keep the wireless costs down for them"

All the info I've seen says 3G is limited to the Sony store.

I'm underwhelmed by Sony's latest reader. IMHO the Kindle DX is way better than the Sony Daily Reader. The screen on the Sony device is simply just too small. I really don't understand what Sony was thinking here. The DX can display textbooks, manuals, magazines, full-page PDFs, sheet music, manga, etc. The Sony screen isn't wide enough to do these things, and I'm shocked that Sony enthusiast aren't really pissed off with this Sony right now.

The Kindle DX isn't perfect. It displays PDFs just fine, but PDF support is missing features like annotation, highlighting, etc. Will Sony's PDF support be better? Who knows, but the fact that they can't display a legible 8.5x11 page on their device kind of makes the point moot.

I don't understand why Amazon hasn't implemented folders yet, but once again Sony kind of sucks here too (just not as bad as Amazon).

Epub support is a definate plus for Sony. I prefer the ePub format over the AMZ format, but I'm kind of glad that Amazon doesn't support ePub, because I can remove the AMZ DRM but not the ePub DRM. I'd rather have a mobi file without DRM than an ePub file with DRM.

Bottom line, Sony hasn't provided a device that needs countering.

We do know that Sony's PDF support will be better, because it is already better on the Sony Touch. I agree, though, that the Daily is not a competitor to the KDX but rather to the Kindle 2. This makes the Daily's price a significant issue.

The ePub DRM can also be removed, see Adobe ADEPT DRM for EPUB circumvented.

Besides, if you spend 300+ for a reader, you think your gonna ditch it when a newer model comes out?!?!
I did with the K1 to K2 conversion...

I will buy the first reader that comes out with folders. I will convert all of my books to read on that device, and will never look back. Whether it is Sony or Amazon, fully functional folders is the game for this anal tax lawyer.

Sony has folders and I'm sure that RobertB will be coming by soon to tell you that Aztac Readers have folders, as well. Both read ePub. The Aztac products have a lot more formats that they read, as well. You can see a comparison in the Wiki, too.

I don't know, from what I'm seeing so far I don't think that the new Sony device would qualify as much more than a dying quail of a single.

IIRC the Opus has folders too.

The Sony's 'folders' are single level, more like playlists, but AFAIK the other devices folders work like a true folder system.
