![]() I LOVE toyotas, in fact I have an '84 Land Cruiser that I am rebuilding back home, but it is not quite ready, and it is 1000 miles away, and considering that *I* am doing the wrenching on it, reliable it isn't at the moment. I would dearly love another Cruiser, but not in the budget atmo. Quote:

All you need is a wagon and some goats.
![]() The Goatman traveled hundreds of miles through Georgia and the Southeast in the mid 20th century. I remember he came through my hometown several times in the 60s. http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/n....jsp?id=h-3467 |

some initial feedback...
for the money and the ratings the Jeep Patriot Sport and Kia Sportage ![]() sorry, the Honda Element is just too darn goofy looking, and believe it or not got lower ratings. my folks have a Subaru, and it is a Dandy vehicle for them, but I've spent a great deal of time in the back seat and know the size limitations. what else did you guys say that was realistic...??? ummm lots of Hondas, that pretty much got dissed? comments? |

Jeep Gran Cherokee
I have a 1996 Jeep Gran Cherokee. It has 4 wheel (kind of like all wheel drive) all the time, and a "Lo 4" shifter so you can really get out of tough environments. Mine has a straight six (not a V six) which is what I wanted because it is a simpler truck engine which is easier to be worked on and just keeps going and going (I think 1996 may have been the last year of the straight sixes...but I'm not sure). My particular model is a "limited" which means for its time it had a lot of bells and whistles like heated seats, electric lumber support, and the like. Believe it or not I get between 18 to 22 MPG with it even when I am towing a trailer. I bought it used about five years ago and the only big work I have had done, is the brakes and AC. I put lots of miles on mine because my husband and reenact the Revoluntionary War so we drive everywhere.
The really cool thing on the limited that I really liked (when I discovered it) was that there buttons on the back of the steering wheel that controlled the radio and CD player...but when the radio died the installers would only hook up the new one to the wheel controllers if we paid an extra $250...so we didn't. Sometimes I feel myself jamming my fingers on the wheel, wondering why the volume isn't increasing...oh yeah...darn.... I don't know how common the "limited" versions are but there seems like there are always a ton of used cherokees for sale here in coastal Georgia, so you might try one out. |

the cheapest Cherokee starts at 30K and is an automatic ;o( I grew up with an old Wagoneer and know the Jeep product well, this is one of the reasons why the Patriot Sport looks like it is worth being checked out!

We recently purchased a 2006 Honda CRV. I started looking for a CRV that was 3 years old thinking that people would be trading in their 3 year leases and I would get a gently used car for a good price. My CRV had around 27,000 miles and cost $18,000. It was the last year they made that style of CRV which seems a little bigger than the newer model. I've been very happy with it.
We also have a 2003 Honda Odyssey that we purchased new and have never had any problems with it. With 3 kids and 3 dogs, the Odyssey is very roomy. We take it down to Florida at least once a year and are always grateful for the extra room. ![]() We've stuck with Hondas because they are so reliable. We've actually bought a couple of slightly used Hondas and have been very happy with them. |
