PhishStyx, chilady has a point ; she is very generously passing along a deal to the forum, so that anyone interested in it can take advantage of it. If it's not your cup of tea, that's fine, you don't have to download it or read it. There is no reason to insist on how uninteresting the book sounds to you personally. I'd also ask you to please try to keep a more respectful tone in your posts ; we make a lot of effort to keep this forum friendly and welcoming to all, and that effort has to be shared by all our members. Please refrain from any ad hominem attacks here ; they are inappropriate and not appreciated.

Thanks PhishStyx!
Thank you so much for making me feel so welcome on this board. Thanks to your warm and friendly comments delivered in the spirit of sharing. From now on, any free reads I come across I will simply keep to myself because apparently there is no value in contributing. I appreciate your thoughtfulness around what I posted. You have really warmed my heart. Thanks Bud!

Now as for me, I'm going to go grab a copy of the free book and just *hope* that I don't wind up feeling compelled to buy all of her earlier book or I might be having some serious discussion with my credit card company! We're very glad you're with us here at MobileRead and I hope you will continue to pass on information about new deals and freebies. |

Oh and yes, I did actually find the clear implication that not gushing over your post made me less intelligent than you quite insulting. Not that anyone seemed to care about me being attacked.

Thank you, Chilady1, for alerting us to free books that may interest members. This is a generous thought.
Phishstyx, why on earth are you taking this so personally? Different books appeal to different readers. If this isn't your thing then try another book. If you wish to post a negative review then at least say WHY it doesn't appeal. Mere sniping is neither informative nor helpful. Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion. But so are other readers. Fortunately, there are enough books to satisfy most tastes. |

I got sniped at for having an opinion that wasn't "kittens and balloons." Then I got sniped at officially by board moderators for essentially for being called stupid. Now I'm getting sniped at by you for no reason that I can figure at all. I never ever said that other readers shouldn't have their own opinions. I just gave an opinion on what sounded like a really awful book, and ever since I gotten crapped on for it by a random assortment of members and by 2 different moderators.
The message that I've gotten so far is opinions are ok as long as you gush pure honey. Except that I see several other members who act like complete arrogant jerks, and nobody seems to bug them about it. So it MUST be something personal you have against me. So has anybody else looked at this book? I'm not the one who wrote the review on amazon, but I didn't even get through the first chapter before deleting the book. Yuck-tooey!!
PhishStyx -- have you looked at the book? I hated the book (okay, I hated the first chapter; that's all I waded through) but I'm still glad to have freebies pointed out. |

It's a matter of appropriate expression is all. Someone gave us a link to a fee book, that's great....Do you go into a bookstore a berate the staff cos 90% of the books in there are "not your cup of tea"? Seems to me it might have been more appropriate to look, think and walk away. But, as you've said, that's ONLY my opinion......*Shrugs* and I'm a bit of a random member anyhow.... I'd never heard of the book before seeing it free at Amazon - I downloaded it (someone might want to read it) without looking at the description. Then saw the controversy over it here .... that night, I saw it on the Recommended Picks/Big Sellers shelves at Barnes & Noble (along with a number of book that I do know are quite good).
Frankly it reminds me of an Oprah pick - so-so story line and poor writing skills (often no grasp of grammar) and little editing. I swear her books are picked based on how much of a hard luck story the author might have, not on any actual merit to the books themselves. Which begs the question - why not have her audition people for their hard luck stories, then get a good ghostwriter to turn it into a book, rather than recommending what is often a 3rd grade level reading experience (one written by a 3rd grader, as well, not just at that reading level as most newspapers try to target). The book sells well (then again, so do most Oprah picks ... after they are featured) and someone out there likes it (even if it's just the editors/pubisher and whoever sets up the shelves at B&N). But I see no need to either berate the person posting the free offer or denigrate the book as one that could not sell at a zero price (it's selling for that high hardback price just fine, it seems). |

Koland, I'm with you on some of your comments, although I disagree with you on the Oprah books. I'm thinking about The Corrections, by Jonathan Franzen. In my opinion, this is a great Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Unfortunately, Oprah picked up on this book. Franzen expressed reservations about the book being chosen. Anyway, my point is that while I generally agree with you on the Oprah Picks, I'm ultimately unimpressed by her "stamp of approval." To me, her action is like a Sanitation Worker putting a sticker on a urinal. If you gotta go, you gotta go. I don't need her approval to read or not read a book.
This freebie from Amazon doesn't interest me one bit. The book may be horrible or the book may be good. I have no plans to read it, because the subject area doesn't interest me one bit. IF I do read it and didn't like it, I would try to interrogate my reasons for not liking it. (I apply the same rules on liking the book, as well.) HOWEVER, this freebie was mentioned by chilady1 and it was kind of her to point this out, because there are some people who may want to read it, for any number of reasons. It would be good to read some reviews from people about this book, for those who are curious about whether or not they are thinking of reading it. Not my kind of book, but thanks again, chilady1, for mentioning it. Don Last edited by Dr. Drib; 09-01-2009 at 07:41 AM. |
