This made me curious, so I emailed them a little while ago.....got a reply within 1/2 hour and here it is......

Hello,

Thanks for asking about the service options we have once you are outside the warranty period.

We learned from the first generation Kindle that changing the battery was rarely needed, so Kindle's battery is not replaceable by users.

The Kindle battery is covered under the initial one-year warranty, as well as the extended warranty offered on Amazon.com. Once you're outside the one- or two-year warranty period, you can get the battery replaced for $59 (plus $10 shipping and handling).

If you have any power or charging problems during the life of your Kindle, you can contact Kindle Support for assistance.

Our goal is to help you get the most out of your Kindle experience. If you need any warranty service on your Kindle, please contact customer support at

As to the question of whether you get the same Kindle back, I emailed them about that also and received this reply.......

Hello from Amazon.com.

If you send a Kindle for battery replacement, we will send same Kindle back to you with replacement battery.

I hope this information is helpful to you.

Thank you for choosing Kindle.

Please let us know if this e-mail resolved your question:

Actually, backing up the entire /documents directory to an external drive/laptop via USB is equally (if not more) convenient than using an SD card plus internal memory. The /documents folder is easily copied to a replacement K2 or DX in seconds. However, if the K1 dies, you'll lose everything in main memory unless you've made the extra step of copying it to an external USB disk.

Of course, all of the above assumes solely non-DRM'd material. Any Amazon-purchased books will need to be re-downloaded to a new Kindle, due to the different PID.

Unfortunately, since neither Kindle 1 nor Kindle 2 have folder capacity, I carry all my books with me, and have to rely on memory or alpha to find the book I really want to read. I have 500 books on my sd card. I would really like to separate them according to genre, but it has gotten overwhelming. If a workable folder situation were implemented, I would spend a weekend or so categorizing them, but until then, it is hit or miss.

I own a Kindle 1 and a Kindle DX. I did not upgrade to the Kindle 2 because of the lack of SD card support. I have around a thousand books on my Kindle 1, and there is something about having the ability to hold an entire library in the palm of my hand that appeals to me.

However, after getting the Kindle DX, which has no SD card support, it has become my primary reader. I've come to the conclusion that lack of folder support limits the usefullness of carrying around a library.

Bottom line, I want a Kindle DX with SD card support and folder support, but if I had to choose between a Kindle 1 and a Kindle 2 then I'd probably go with the Kindle 2.
