From the front page here, and from the Sony press release:

Sony will also provide an update path for owners of the first edition Reader, model PRS-500, so early adopters of the Reader will be able to enjoy this benefit as well.

Since the original reason given for not updating the 500 to ePub was hardware limitations, I'm wondering if this is just another trade-in program, or if they have actually developed a firmware update.

I'm kind of torn on which one I would prefer; $100 off a PRS-300 would be really nice!

Honest. That is their plan for the remaining 500s.

I can't really blame them.

Too bad it didn't work. My 500 is working great (knock, knock) but it's replacement is a Kindle2. I've already bought it.

Having used both, you really want a Sony. I carry mine everywhere, and the 505 cover mechanical stuff is just disheartening. Perhaps the new machines will be a step forward, but the last two "new models" weren't.

This has always been a major problem with Sony. It is big in product or technology innovation, but quite poor in support for loyal customers. I had sad experiences investing in Sony's Betamax technology decades ago, and I swore off Sony products when it hanged its SE Symbian smart phone users out to dry a few months back. Yet, here I am embracing another Sony product, which seems to have no promising future at all - again.
