Assuming you can create the LaTeX source and macros, I don't see why not.

But I would be far more interested in a multilingual annotated version of The Divine Comedy, for instance. (I've already uploaded a Mobi version, and will shortly upload an ePUB one, but not annotated.)

Can you show me a screenshot or two from the mobi eBook you made?

I can't quite visualize how the multilingual part would work...

Also, what size are the pictures? Suitable for 300 dpi printing too, or are they too small for that?

Edit: Oh, and where would one get the annotations from?

I assume all text sources, illustrations, and annotations are firmly in the public domain in all countries?

I'll try to make a screenshot one of these days. For the multilingual part, I just include the original and all the translations, and, every 15th verse (5 stanzas) I added a set of links to all the other versions (in smaller type and right-aligned, trying to be unobtrusive), so it should be relatively easy to jump between versions at any point of the text.

They are around 700×900 pixels (you can find them here)

I don't know if all of them are available. The Wikisource German version has annotations, I believe an English version with annotations can also be found in the Internet Archive...

Let's see, Dante died in 1321, Streckfuß in 1844, Longfellow and Pinheiro in 1882, Doré in 1883... that should make the Italian, German, English and Portuguese translations, as well as the illustrations public domain everywhere. Only the Russian version would be special, since Lozinsky died in 1955. (Lamennais died in 1854, Mitre in 1906, for future French and Spanish translations.)

Don't worry about the screenshot, Jellby. I'll be able to check it out later myself. I just thought you might have them handy.

Thanks for all the info... it sounds like an intriguing but definitely complex project. I might play around with it... though I do not see myself being able to take the time to get the annotations in there as well.

No luck, couldn't include the text more than 8 times. With the 9th it spits:

! TeX capacity exceeded, sorry [number of destination names (dest_names_size)=131072].

And that number seems to be hardcoded in the pdftex source code.

Yeah... I hit the same issue.

It seems a little ridiculous... incredibly ridiculous actually. With swap counted I have just short of 6 GB of memory. Seeing memory limits for LaTeX handled in the MBs kind of pisses me off...

Knuth was seemingly short-sighted in a couple of ways with LaTeX... internationalization is definitely one way, and it seems memory issues are another.
