Wow loads thanks all, I think perhaps some are a bit off track as they seem to be set in different worlds with aliens all over the place or set in the future.
Which i love and will add to my list however in this case and for now i'm looking more for something set in around current times that then unfolds into a discovery, exploration sci fi type journey. eg like Rama or Spin |

It is a Young Adult but a good story by MR's own Todd Fonseca. Magic Kingdom For Sale - Sold starts out in present day and the protaganist travels to another land. One of my favorite stories by one of my favorite authors. Certainly fantasy though, not sci-fi. BOb |

![]() About Spellsinger from Wikipedia The story initially deals with the character of Jonathan Thomas Meriweather, referred to by the locals as Jon-Tom, when he is unwillingly pulled into a fantasy world by the turtle wizard Clothahump. Having been, at the moment of his transportation, high on cannabis, Jon-Tom initially thinks it is all a dream brought on by the drugs. He soon finds out differently: he is in an unfamiliar world with little prospect of returning home anytime soon. The world of Spellsinger is largely inhabited by animals that are similar to those found on Earth, but are anthropomorphic: generally bipedal, they are intelligent, able to wear clothing and handle tools, generally closer to human-sized than their Earth counterparts, and are capable of speech. Humans, far from being the dominant species, here are equal to others. The threat to the Western areas are from the Plated Folk, larger versions of insects and other arthropods who periodically mount assaults on the Western areas. Spiders are not included in the main society, which has centipedes and various insects like beetles. Spiders have their own society known as The Weavers, and are highly isolationist. |

"...he is unwillingly pulled into a fantasy world by the turtle wizard Clothahump..."
Sorry, that right there turned me off. I wish that I did like fantasy, because there are so many more worlds to explore. But as soon as the maiden and/or squire finds the dragon egg and it hatches and imprints on her/him, well, I'm finished with it. Same for horny gals and sexy vampires. The first couple hundred stories like that were something new, but the next couple thousand are just repeats with different titles. Maybe someone should write a story about a horny dragon and an unattractive vampire with bad skin? |

Jack McDevitt - Ancient Shores set on earth - discovery of an alien artifact -.
James Rollins - Deep Fathom - On The Day Everything Changed Forever ... The millennium's first eclipse of the sun cast a shroud over the Earth. And then catastrophe struck... On The Day The End Began ... Solar flares have triggered a series of gargantuan natural disasters. Earthquakes and hellfire rock the globe. The death toll rises at an unimaginable rate. And in the midst of chaos, Air Force One and America's president have vanished from the skies. The Sea Revealed A Mystery Ex-Navy Seal Jack Kirkland surfaces from an aborted underwater salvage mission to find the Earth burning--and the U.S. on the narrow brink of a nuclear apocalypse. Now,aboard his oceangoing exploration ship, Deep Fathom, Kirkland is on a desperate mission that is leading him to an earth-shattering discovery miles below the ocean's surface. For devastating secrets anda power an ancient civilization could not contain have been cast out into a modern day--and they will forever alter a world racing toward its own destruction. Lincoln Child, Deep Storm - (I can't remember if this is actually sci-fi - artifact discovery) - Twelve-thousand feet beneath the Atlantic Ocean ... scientists are excavating the most extraordinary undersea discovery ever made. But is it the greatest archaeological find in history--or the most terrifying? Former naval doctor Peter Crane is urgently summoned to a remote oil platform in the North Atlantic to help diagnose a bizarre medical condition spreading through the rig. But when he arrives, Crane learns that the real trouble lies far below--on "Deep Storm," a stunningly advanced science research facility built two miles beneath the surface on the ocean floor. The top secret structure has been designed for one purpose: to excavate a recently discovered undersea site that may hold the answers to a mystery steeped in centuries of myth and speculation. Sworn to secrecy, Dr. Crane descends to Deep Storm. A year earlier, he is told, routine drilling uncovered the remains of mankind's most sophisticated ancient civilization: the legendary Atlantis. But now that the site is being excavated, a series of disturbing illnesses has begun to affect the operation. Scientists and technicians are experiencing a bizarre array of symptoms--from simple fatigue to violent psychotic episodes. As Crane is indoctrinated into the strange world of Deep Storm and commences his investigation, he begins to suspect that the covert facility conceals something more complicated than a medical mystery. The discovery of Atlantis might, in fact, be a cover for something far more sinister ... and deadly. Brian William Neal, Denizens - In the near future, two very different groups set out on two journeys. One, a group of astronauts, are attempting to discover if the speed of light is attainable, while the other, a team of ocean scientists, is investigating sightings of strange beasts in the deepest place on earth--Challenger Deep. Neither group is aware of the other, nor do any of them realize just how dramatically their expeditions are connected. What each group finds is totally unexpected, and when their paths finally cross, the finale will blow your mind. Thomas Greanias, Raising Atlantis - Buried Under Two Miles of Ice. In Antarctica, a glacial earthquake swallows up a team of scientists ... and exposes a mysterious monument older than the Earth itself. In Peru, archaeologist Dr. Conrad Yeats is apprehended by U.S. Special Forces ... to unlock the final key to the origins of the human race. In Rome, the pope summons environmental activist Dr. Serena Serghetti to the Vatican ... and reveals a terrifying vision of apocalyptic disaster. In space, a weather satellite reveals four massive storms forming around the South Pole ... and three U.S. spy satellites disappear from orbit. T Last edited by mgrunk; 08-07-2009 at 09:37 PM. |

All Judgment Fled by James White is very similar to Rendezvous With Rama, only better. It was written four years before Clarke's novel. Some have called White the British Larry Niven.
His Sector General books are great too. Amazon has an Omnibus of 3 Sector General stories, Alien Emergencies. It contains Ambulance Ship, Sector General, and Star Healer. Last edited by BenG; 08-08-2009 at 12:03 PM. |

I don't know if any of his books are available in e-editions, but I think Hal Clement was one of the best "hard SF" authors that I've read.
I found a list of authors who are often associated with hard SF at http://www.hardsf.org/WritHd01.htm and http://www.hardsf.org/WritHd02.htm Many of the authors that others have recommended are on the lists. |
