The crowd scene is the reaction to the aliens ripping the roof off the convention center and attacking the crowd. I'm one of the guys who is pointing at them and being skeptical. This is, after all an SF Convention...

I will decide on Saturday. If my cold does not get any worse I will be at the meet-up.

Some interesting program items today. Best was probably the discussion bewteen Paul Krugman and Charles Stross. The dealer room and art show is rather small compare to an US worldcon.

Paul Krugman is an ubergeek... for a noble prize winning economist anyway.

The Theory Of Interstellar Trade

Kind of a hero of mine.

Today brings a couple panels that may be of interest to the electronic reader world. First up: Medieval France: Just Another Fantasy? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they had electronic readers back then...

Then a panel that will certainly be sedate and calm: Intellectual Property and Creative Commons.

Then I'm going to a presentation on what will come after the Shuttle Program.

Then lunch. Then losing lunch at a panel entitled: "I, For One, Welcome Our New Zombie Overlords."

Afternoon will bring a couple panels on climate change and a panel on writing a series. I wonder if they've heard of Harv and Vera?

Finally, I'm going to a panel called Faking Paper: ebooks.

I'll update when I feel like it!

wow, i don't know how you're going to stay awake for that one. it'll probably be a bunch of little old ladies sipping tea and talking about knitting on the side.

if they haven't, they've got no ebook / series cred whatsoever.

Felix Gilman, an editor from Tor just said that "Almost all publishing houses have come to the conclusion that DRM is not a viable means of protecting intellectual property." You heard it here second, folks!

Cory Doctorow uses Creative Commons to publish all of his books electronically as they are being published on paper as a means of getting his name out there and getting well known. He says that when he started out, everyone told him that he could obviously afford to give it away, since he was not Stephen King. Now that he is a bigger name, he gets told that of course he can afford to give it away, since he's a big name.

I asked him what he thought would be the end result and what would happen when his paper sales fell off. His answer: "I have no idea, but I can tell you this, when we get to thend of this transition phase, I'm going to be in a much better position to dictate what my fortunes are than someone who has ignored it."

It's interesting that he 'has no idea', I would have thought he would, as somewhat of a futurist, thought this through and would at least have had some notions as to his publishing future. Then again, this could be honesty showing out. None of us actually know what the future holds for writers (I'm hoping community funding and patronage).

Thanks again for the reporting on the Worldcon. I wish I was there

Ask Cory if he'd make the meetup with us.
