Does the search text in book function work with sideloaded books? I tried it on a book just now and I get "title not yet indexed". I just got my PW yesterday and loaded books last night so I'm thinking it's either the search doesn't work or the device is still busy indexing all books.

It is still busy indexing the books -- hence the wording of the status message.
![]() It can take a while, depending on how many books need to be indexed. You can see how many books still need to be indexed by searching for a nonsense word in the All Books scope. The Kindle does not distinguish between sideloaded and purchased books. However, purchased books will download extra information that sideloaded books generally don't have, like X-Ray, pagenumber, and Authorinfo data. (Note that there is software to generate guesstimated pagenumbers, or scrape Shelfari/Goodreads and generate X-Ray files.) Search uses an index created on the device, so it is naturally available to sideloaded books. |

It indexes as a background job, even (especially) during sleep.
The indexer eats quite a bit of battery in the process -- it's not a bad idea to leave it plugged in overnight to index. I believe the indexer runs faster when charging, probably because it knows it can safely use a lot more power without running down the battery while you are trying to read. ![]() |

This is a very old thread. Odd that it is somehow still relevant.

I had the same problem recently. For hours, the Kindle refused to index the book I was currently reading (even when not reading it). Eventually I plugged the Kindle in. Ten minutes later, the book was indexed.

It's a very good idea to always plug the Kindle in to a wall socket while it's indexing. The indexer process appears to run at very low priority when the device is on battery power. It indexes in a fraction of the time when it's on external power.

Probably not too odd. Indexing has always been a part of the way the Kindle works, and hence always has, and probably always will, cause occasional issues for people.

Looks like it. I checked mine before I left the house and it says that there were 820 books remaining to be indexed. Just left it on sleep mode without plugging it in. I checked when I got back and it's still the same. I plugged it in to my computer an hour ago and I checked it just now and the number went down to 773.

I had to use the search feature for a side-loaded book on my Kindle, even though this thread is old, the solution to my problem was in the restarting and plugging in as suggested above. Thank you.

Old topic and useful.
As I was running ;ReadingTimeReset on my KPPW, a warning said that indexing was not complete. Same message after 4 days. A Calibre test of the book said that a huge index file PL27.xhtml was too big. However ReadingTimeReset was running fine and no drain battery. I guess that KPPW can lose a lot of power because of massive indexing. I killed the Index Chapter (done by the editor and the author, full of hyperlinks), quite useless, Calibre check said no problemo. And no warning from the Kindle.
