I'm in San Diego, MobileRead need an ambassador to the press event? :-)

I also like the advertising "Access a wide number of online bookstores." Footnote says Google books, which we knew. But they also list "Personal Publishers," which is sorta vague (Self Publishers?). Maybe this will be a small step toward a standardized e-book format for all e-Readers (biggest problem with all current e-Readers right now)? One can wish!

And... Mac Sofware! First time that's been stated in a hardware press release!

Probably the Collections support, at least from the photo gallery (you can see Collections on the 300).

This is interesting:
"Book lovers interested in trying out a Reader in person will also be able to find them for sale at Best Buy, Borders, Costco, Staples, Target, Wal-Mart and other authorized retailers nationwide. "

Someone in the Marketing Dept has been very, very busy. Aggressive pricing and a lot of retail outlets is going to put the Sony Reader in the consciousness of a lot of people.

Two problems on 600:

1. 8 levels of greyscale instead of 16 as even Chinese readers have. The screen supports 16 so probably old controller.

2. The "next page" button still located very unconvinient.

Question on the CPU speeds.

How fast is the page turning on the 700 (by button, not swipe) vs. the 505? I have a 500, and it's slow (still love it!)... but the Kindle 2 blows it to smithereens. Haven't seen a 505 or 700.

This sounds very good - and like Sony might be a very serious competitor to the Kindle with regards to market recognition.

If they fixed the PRS-700 glare, then the PRS-600 becomes the top reader for students.

Thanks Sony for not having made this announcement two weeks ago. Now I'm poor and my overhyped reader doesn't even support ePub
you could always sell it and get a 600 instead.

maybe the number buttons on the right can also be used to turn pages ? then it just leaves the left side button to find... although 3 page turn buttons on a 5" device seems like a lot. any word on an accelerometre ?

One point against Sony: they don't supply some necessary equipment out of the box (cover and charger)

Considering the service manual mentioned a "Dutch model", I have a feeling we'll get it (and it will be announced on August 26th).

But I generally charge at night, and I don't have a computer next to my bed! The fact that it is chargeable by USB cable should be a given, I wouldn't buy a device that didn't work that way.

Actually, it is! I only have money for 1, but I want them all! And I had finally decided upon a 5"... But I'd love that touchscreen...

ah, i see. i don't usually worry too much about charging since i'm always at my computer and i usually plug it in at least once a week for moving books around, and it charges then. but a charger would be nice, i admit.

well i have the same dilemma then !!!

(i recommend the touchscreen. it makes a huge difference in comfort for navigation and reading.)

I find a touchscreen more important than the dictionary and it's a very good point in its favour...

Looks like I'll be a fence sitter at least till August 26th. Then I'll keep on sitting on it (I've added some pillows, so it's not too uncomfortable) till fall has arrived and the Txtr is introduced. and then again till the BeBook 2 gets introduced...
