Using a mobile (cell) phone without a proper "hands free" installation has been illegal in this country for some years (which I think is an excellent thing), but you still see people doing it. It really annoys me - it's such a dangerous thing to do while driving.

Yes, same here. I'm glad to have a hand-free kit in the car, although I must admit that phoning can still be distracting, depends on what people are telling you (especially if the person on the phone makes you laugh ).

Listen to music or catch up on phone calls, with a hands free car kit of course

Studies have shown that a conversation with someone out of the car with no idea of ongoing action can be as dangerous.

There's usually too much going on around me to try and concentrate on anything other than driving. My daily commute takes me past the local Sheriff's office and a couple of spots where traffic cops are actively patrolling so I try not to do things that would attract attention. I don't use my phone in the car and know the controls on my mp3 player well enough that I don't have to look at it to change settings.

I tend to do things when I'm stopped at traffic lights. Brush my hair at one stop and twist it up at the next. Sometimes I'll jot down a reminder or add something to my grocery list. When the college students descend on the town in the fall (35,000 coming in a couple of weeks), the traffic gets busier and the wait time at traffic lights get longer. There's one spot where (if I time it wrong) I can spend up to 10 minutes stopped or creeping along. I usually just people watch during that time, but I have been known to browse through a magazine or catalog while waiting.

Even though it's not illegal here in Virginia, we have a steadfast rule in our house ~ no talking on the cell phone while driving unless it's an emergency. Shannon has tried to get around that a few times by calling and asking a question that she "thinks" is an emergency. When she turned 22 and started working, she thought the rule didn't apply anymore until I reminded her that she's still living in our house, so the rules still apply!

Motorists talking on cell phones in the car is one of my biggest pet peeves. I mean, really, what did they do before cell phones?!?!

Same with me and I go the extra lenght of turning off the phone before going in the car, they can just leave a bleepin message!

I guess those people didn't exist before phones...

LOCKPORT, N.Y. -
Police say a western New York tow truck driver was texting on one cell phone while talking on another when he slammed into a car and crashed into a swimming pool.

Niagara County sheriff's deputies say 25-year-old Nicholas Sparks of Burt admitted he was texting and talking when his flatbed truck hit the car Wednesday morning in Lockport, which is outside Buffalo.

The truck then crashed through a fence and sideswiped a house before rolling into an in-ground pool.

Police say the 68-year-old woman driving the car suffered head injuries and was in good condition. Her 8-year-old niece suffered minor injuries.

Sparks was charged with reckless driving, talking on a cell phone and following too closely. It couldn't be determined Thursday whether he has a lawyer.

now that is bad.

From what I remember (if not this case then another) the car the victim was in was reduced in size so much that the lorry driver didn't realise it was there (i.e. he'd never seen it).

I completely fail to understand any opposition to banning texting and phonecalls while driving...

Some people can't seem to have a conversation while driving either. You know, the type with windmill gestures...

On a vaguely connected note, I was following a car home today, with a dog leaning enthusiastically out the window. Nothing unusual in that. Well, except that it was the drivers window......

You know those slower cars with bumper stickers claiming: "Baby on board."
I always wish I could add one next to it saying: :"...and it's driving."

I am ALWAYS singing in the car! Being a trained singer, I can really get into it, making me look VERY silly.

My 18 year old niece rear-ended a car stopped at a traffic light and totalled her brand new BMW convertible (did I tell you my older brother makes WAY too much money). After much evasion, it came out that she was texting her friend to tell her that she was running late. No worries, though. My brother went right out and bought her a Cadillac.

Does he need a new son that makes furniture? I need a newer car...

I don't mind if my dad is younger than me!
