I had a similar problem once with my 505. The battery died and the screen froze, even after charging thru the power port. (ALWAYS charge thru the power port, NOT the usb!) It just appeared dead and wouldn't recover.

Couldn't figure it out but, thanks to the info here, I was able to hard-reset my 505 after a while. This was the only problem with my 505 in over 1.5 years, and it hasn't been a problem since.

BTW, the regular usb cable isn't a "charging" cable--it's really meant to be primarily a data cable. (Note that even the official Sony Reader ac chargers do not use usb.) I highly recommend buying a generic PSP power/data cable. This lets you charge the Reader (faster, more reliably, and while reading) from a usb port through the round yellow power port on the Reader.

Data, not power

I can second this. Last night I left my Reader plugged into my computer, which was copying a few gigs of files onto it (long story). In the morning, I found the computer had written about 2GB, then hit a lot of I/O errors—and the Reader's battery was dead. Apparently, writing to the SD card takes more power than the USB cable can provide.

(I have an AC cable, but I thought that was just for charging faster; it never occurred to me that "slower" might be "in reverse".)

When Sony replaced my 700 last week, I was sort of hoping they'd replace it with a 600 but no such "luck", they sent me a refurbished 700.
