You don't need to register your reader with Sony UK or get a Sony membership ID to use it. And unless you have already done so I would suggest that you do not install the software that came with it on the CD. the Sony eBook library UK version only takes you to Waterstones, where you can buy ebooks anyway without any registration (but you will need to download and install the Adobe digital editions software which you will find on Waterstones site or Adobe.com then register that with Adobe).

The classics on the Sony free disk are mostly available here on Mobileread and will be better formatted with less errors as they are lovingly hand crafted by MR members. (check the ebook link at the top of the page - you want LRF or Epub formats or maybe PDF (last choice) )

If you want access to the monthly free ebooks on the Sony store in the USA you need to download the US version of the Sony eBook library software from http://ebookstore.sony.com (click the download software link at the top of that page). This will give you the US version of Sony Ebook library, install that & register with the ebook store from within the eBook library - don't give any information as to your address nor under any circumstances give credit card details, (you don't need to to get the free books, but they are only technically available within the USA.) If you visit the store with your reader plugged in to the computer with the USB cord it will ask you if you want to register the reader, choose yes in this instance. This will allow you to download & read the $0.00 free books.

Ask questions of anything not clear or you don't understand one of our many friendly & helpfull members will respond.

I'm well and truly still in the bitten off more than she can chew situation. I'll bypass Sony since I'm interested in classics, at least for the time being. I have well and truly messed up Calibre - entirely my own fault because of ignorance and now hey want me to consult my local Trac administrator. Too scared to do thateven if I knew what it meant and too ashamed to explain my disgraceful carryings on. But I can get books directly from MR can't I? Do I plug in the PRS 505 then find the instructions either online or on the PRS? It still has me flummoxed: on the right 1 - 10 and 2 half moons. Maybe they turn pages along with the picture down on the left. I boldly switched it on and found Sleepytime for Eddie. Back to the instructions. After that miserable little picture on the huge sheet, it goes on about Sony software which I believe I don't want. Should I get a computer literate person to come and start it off for me before I ruin the lot?
(And yes, it was a pest reading a paperback in the bath and having to dry my hand each time I wanted to turn a page.) So please. I want to download some MR books and I believe I want to do it in LRF. I coul start with The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club. If I knew how.

Go here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51701

Click on the name of the attached file in the first message. That shoudl download the book to your computer - probably to the desktop, but it depends what preference is set in your web browser.

Plug your Sony into your computer with the USB cable (small end into the Sony on the bottom edge, large end into a USB port on your computer).

The Sony should appear on your computer like an external hard disk, "Untitled" if you're on a Mac, probably E: or F: on a Windows PC.

On the disk that's the Sony are two folders. Open the 'database' folder. In that folder are two more folders. Open the 'media' folder. Inside that are three folders. Open the 'books' folder. Copy the file your downloaded from Mobileread into the books folder. On Mac just eject the Untitled disk. On Windows, in the task bar select the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon at the right hand side (little green arrow) and choose the "safely Remove Mass Storage Devices". Then unplug the Sony.

Once it stops showing "connected", choose option 2 "Books by Title" by pressing the small button 2 on the right hand side.

Select TUV (option 8). You should now be able to see "The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club" in the list of titles. press the numbered button next to the title. (You may then get rotating arrows for a little while while it paginates the book.) If it doesn't immediately show the first page, select option 1 "Continue Reading".

Once at the pages of the book, move forward and page through the book using the little half moon buttons on the right hand side or the large circular button at the bottom left (that's maked with an open book).

hi oldlady, please, don't feel worried about asking for help ! that is what this forum is all about, and you'll see there are a lot of people who are all too happy to take you by the hand.

for calibre, don't be afraid. i recommend you start by watching the video tour that kovid has made which you can find here. it will give you a quick overview of the basic functions and should help you understand what you need to know to use it. it's really a lot easier than it seems at first ! i promise. and if you've got questions after that, come back and ask us !

now, as for downloading books from mobileread, it's very easy and you can even put them on your sony without using calibre (but, calibre will make it much easier to manage your library, so i do recommend you give it another shot, and ask for help if you need it).

download the book you want by clicking on the title in the book thread, and save it to your computer somewhere easy to find. i recommend creating a folder somewhere called "ebooks" or similar, to keep them all together. for the sony you want either epub format or lrf.

plug your sony into your computer using the usb cable. if it's the first time you've plugged it in, you will see a little message in the bottom right of your screen, telling you the computer has detected a new device, and after a few seconds it should say that it's ready to be used. if it's not the first time, it will go straight to the next step : you should see a window pop up called something like "external disk" and asks you what actions you want windows to do.

it should look something like this :

scroll down the list of options until you see "open the folder to show the files" (or something similar ; i'm translating from the french display on my computer) with a picture of a folder next to it. select that, and click ok. it should open a new file explorer window.

if that doesn't happen, no worries. just open the file browser yourself by double clicking on "my computer" : you'll see the sony appear in the list of drives, with it's own letter. it will be called something like "external disk" and it will probably be the last one on the list. double click to open the drive. i don't know exactly how the 505 file system looks but on the 700, which i have, there is a folder called "database", inside that one there is a folder called "media", inside that one a folder called "books". once you're in the folder called books, unless you've deleted them, you'll see the files which are the sample books from sony which come pre-loaded. you can delete them, or leave them on there, as you like.

open a new file explorer window, and navigate to where you put the ebook you'd like to read. click on it, and drag it into the sony folder. you'll see a dialogue box called "copying file".

when the copy is finished, eject the sony from your computer using the "eject device securely" function (in the system tray in the bottom right of your screen, next to the clock), or, in your file browser, right click on the drive, and in the menu that comes up, select "eject". when your computer tells you it's safe, unplug the sony.

i'm not quite familiar enough with the 505 to tell you exactly how to use it, but when you turn it on, you should probably see a screen which gives you some options, like "go to library" ; when you get into the library, you'll see the list of books on your device, including the one you put there. if you still have all the samples from sony it might not be on the first page.

if you don't know how to use the 505 someone around here can give you more detailed instructions, just ask.

good luck ! i'm sure you'll get it figured out in the end, and pretty soon you'll find it really easy !

edit : i see pdurrant was faster, and can give you better advice about the 505. i told you there were lots of friendly people around here to help you.
