True, but I believe, and it's been a while since I looked into it, that his later works fall under the "not renewed after 28 years" rule.

Pretty likely, as he wroze mostly short stories nd the mags he wrote for didn't live long enough to renew the copyright!

On a side note, I found this comment of theirs to be depressingly true; "here in the USA (where basically nothing published in 1923 or later will ever enter the public domain, to protect Disney's 'Steamboat Willie')..."

No new books enter the Australian public domain until 1st January 2026.

This is because of the change to lifetime+70 years copyright from lifetime+50 years. Unlike the UK, Australias didn't apply this to works that had already become public domain.

The change came into effect during 2005, so the works of authors who died in 1954 and earlier are in the public domain, but the works of authors who died in 1955 won't enter the Australian public domain until 1st Jan 2026.

But all that means in practice is that Australia already has in the public domain all those works which most of our countries will slowly acquire, year by year, until 2026. At that point, we'll be "in sync" again, and we'll both continue to gain new PD works, year by year.

Yeah, I screwed up.

I hadn't realized that Australia had changed from a 50+PD to a 70+PD country. I should have said, "I'd love to know which books will soon be going into the Canadian public domain over the next couple years..." I'm pretty sure Canada is still a 50+PD county. Anyway, I hope I haven't caused too much confusion and people get the spirit of my post.

Yes, Canada is still a "life+50" country. That is the specific reason that the MR servers are in Canada.

Oh well, I only know of two writers (who are dead) that I'd love to have their books from (and can't find them in shops), Asimov and Clarke. And I'll probably be dead (or incapable to read) by the time they go into PD...

IF a book is in the Public Domain in a life+50 country, and they then change to life+70... those books still remain in the PD right?

That was so in Australia, but it apparently wasn't in the UK, according to post #20.

Yeah, Clarke died last year and Asimov in the early 1990s. I really like Asimov's non-fiction work and unfortunately most of it is out of print. Life and Energy has to be the best chemistry book I've ever read.
