The ONLY sane response is to [do some act which MR insists I cannot post here - thus rather than vent my spleen I have inserted this 'safe' comment to explain why I've deleted my original post]. The only NYT article I can find about this says they haven't decided yet when the ebook will be released (it's an article about when to release ebooks). Not that it won't be released at the same time, but just that they're weighing options (which any business will do).

I'm sure the darknet version will be out no later than the next day (if not before the official release) regardless of the status of an official release.

I'm betting you'll be able to find pirated versions on 9/14.

They were; a handful of stores had accidentally sold a few copies a few days before the release date. It's also possible that some bookstore employee grabbed one to copy.

The one that hit the web strongly wasn't OCRd at all--it was jpg photographs of someone holding the book open; the pages were almost unreadable, and the person's fingers could be seen holding the pages. That made it very unlikely to be a forgery.

Any pre-release text version would've been ignored as a probable fake. (There was a fanfic that was set in Harry's 7th year that was being passed around as the final book, but people who keep up with fanfic could either identify the story, or recognize the fanfic tropes that made it unlikely to be real.)

And the first electronic copy of Harry otter #7 was a badly typed in copy that used those photos as the source.

It is a nice example of how much people will do to get that book without having to pay the HB pice...

But I'm afraid most publishers won't see the light until they're underground and a younger generation has taken over (the generation that has grown up with the concept of electronic books)

Exactly. The more restrictions publishers put in place, the more motivation they are providing for people to get around them.

Yup...prohibitions simply have never worked...you can even look at the original owners manual for some members of the human race...the first prohibition failed in Eden...been the same over and over ever since. It is always going to fail when law dictates people must refrain from their very nature...in this case curiosity and adventure or even just a sense of controlling one's own world. Work within human nature in your business model and you will come out the other side as a winner.

heck, if I was a publisher I would have my own darknet site that seemed to offer every danged one of the company's works a week or so before they hit the shelves...and I would charge for the ability to download as well as gather all the marketing data one could about the visitors...it will not harm the HB sales at all and would be a big resource for the business likely either turning a small profit or at least covering it's overhead...leaving the profits being the demographic data gathered.

Ever wonder if any publishers have already done something like this?

It was available for preorder, but not anymore. That lends a little credibility to the original post.
