First I've read about the problem, is it really that common? Looks to me like the one pictured in the article has been dropped, the screen is broken.

You think? I'm not sure what kind of impact on a drop could could cause cracks that that seem to radiate out. I don't have a Kindle 2/case, so I'm not sure where the clips actually go but steady pressure from the top seems more likely.

Amazon goes in really weird directions for the 'official' cases - the one released with the Kindle 1 is also a bizarre design that seems to invite disaster, so it wouldn't surprise me they didn't think things through.

I have not had any problems with mine but I dont try to open the care the wrong way. I dont see why they did not just make it into a hinge so it opened both ways or provided little straps holding the kindle in place when opening.

It looks like Amazon has caved and will replace broken Kindles free of charge -- see article.

Well, if Amazon's willing to cave in so easily, I think it's fairly clear that they did indeed know about this problem beforehand. Unfortunately, it only applies to people who purchased the "official" K2 cover (and since they're the only supplier of the "official" cover, they have the sales records). Looks like anyone who bought some of the third party cases that use the same attachment mechanism are SOL on the replacement policy. OTOH, the class action suit is going forward, so there may be some remedy for them eventually.

I had it since February 27th and had no problems with these hinges. In fact I love them so much that I bought one for M-Edge so that I can get a red one since Amazon's only comes in basic black!

This reminds me very much of the cracking/breaking screen fiasco that Apple went through when it released the first wave of IPod nanos (I think it was the nano) - and people began complaining about the screen not standing up to any sort of pressure. And Apple initially accusing folk of carrying the nano unprotected in pockets next to keys, coins, etc. - it was the buyers' fault! Then they caved (I think documents got released that showed Apple knew about the flaw - not sure, I'm dredging this from DEEP memory) - and replaced the units with the proper screens.

First rule of commerce: Blame the buyer!

You know, I have the cover too. I have had my kindle 2 for three months with the cover and never have had any problems with it. That is scary though that it could break that easily. I have not had that problem either. Then again, I never put my hand in between the back which could cause this problem. I always leave mine out flat.

The Amazon has PATENTED the cover attachment design. So the only legal way to sell cover with this attachment mechanism is to obtain a blessing from Amazon. Of course you have to cross their palm with silver first. This opens interesting can of worms from legal standpoint ;-)

Because they wanted a mechanism they could have PATENTED. They want to collect money from manufacturers of accessories.

I have both the kindle 2 and the "official" amazon case and noticed about 2 weeks ago that I had some hairline cracks on the casing next to the top mounting hinge. I called Kindle support today and they are sending me out a replacement for BOTH the Kindle 2 and the case. The CSR also recommended that many of the problems result in trying to open the back of the case first instead of the front cover and to help with this issue to put velcro on the back cover to attach to the device.

I asked whether or not the new device would be a refurb or new and he didn't have information on that. But looking at the invoice, it says NEW for both the case & device. I'll know for sure on Monday when it will be delivered.

All-in-all, I'm very happy with the customer support from Amazon.

Hope this helps others.

Cheers,
Sealos
