The same happens if you use a different USB port. (And you do get the usual sequence of USB mesages as Linux scans and automounts other USB drives?)
I'll run through this exact scenario tonight so I can give some exact answers, but from memory I can at least say this:
  • The red light always comes on when I plug it in, both on my laptop and with the USB charger.
  • If I leave it charging long enough, the led turns GREEN (not off).
  • When the led is off, and I press the power button, the led turns green for a long time. This wasn't the case when it originally crashed, but after charging it this is the behaviour now.
  • I tried it on 2 different laptops, no indication of any activity when plugging it in.

I'll try your scenario tonight, and post the results along with a picture of my screen.

Oh, and a quick thank you to everybody for all the help in diagnosing my problem so far... it's highly appreciated.

Did you remember seeing the LED flashing during the first "bad boot"? (If I remember correcly it should flash for about 5sec if the battery is too low)

OK, tried your scenario:

Starting situation: led off.

Plugged the CyBook into USB, led turns red, no response from laptop.

Waited a few minutes (took a picture in the mean time and uploaded it), then pressed the power button while it was still plugged into the laptop. No response at all: led colour does not change, screen does not change and nothing in dmesg.

Pressed reset button while still connected: same result.

Unplugged USB: led goes off.

Pressed power: led turns green, but intensity varies: starts low, then gets brighter. Led turns off after a while (fairly long).

Here's the picture I took, somehow it wasn't properly rotated... but it shows the text of the last page still on the screen, plus the 'snow' from the aborted boot:

Forgot to answer this: no, there wasn't any blinking as such, though there was some variation in the brightness of the green led.

If needed, I think I could record the whole thing with my webcam and pop it on Youtube... not sure if that would help.

Did you reset it (with the hole in the back of the Cybook) after it was completly recharged ?

Yes, I did. Each time I've started with the power button, then tried the reset button, then the power button again.

As I understand what I've read here, the reset forces the device to shut down (turn off), and the power button should then make it do a 'clean boot' so to speak.

To me, it looks like the power button itself works but the device never actually enters the boot sequence... this might be because of corrupted firmware, but it's hard to tell since it offers so little feedback...

At least for the 820 version (mine), the reset "button" resets and restart the device.
Have you the possibility to plug your Cybook on a Windows PC, just to verify ?

I prefer Linux because it gives better feedback, but I did dual boot my laptop to Vista to make sure... no dice either.

No response yet from Bookeen, hoping to hear from them soon.

If you could see the folders of your Cybook, you could try to replace the system folder...
In your case, I think too that you'll have to try to reinstall the firmware (when Bookeen will send you the good one)...

Slightly off-topic, but what are people's experiences with Bookeen customer support?

I sent an e-mail to support@bookeen.com, but didn't receive a reply yet. I did see a phone number listed on the FAQ list, but my French isn't all that great :s

Any news?

Have you tried re-flashing the firmware?

Complete silence from Bookeen so far... I filed a repair request with the site where I bought the CyBook.

I didn't try flashing the CyBook, since I don't have the proper firmware files... flashing it with a different version didn't seem like a good idea.
