I think it's more of a policy move on Mobi's part than a statement about the nature of competing systems on the same platform that aren't necessarily incompatible with each other. It's arbitrary, and stinks.

(Incidentally, it looks like this exact problem is what held up the firmware update for the Cybook, if you've been following that at all.)

There's no "technical" issue; it's simply the terms of Mobipocket's licencing; they require DRM exclusivity.

IMO, dropping support for dictionaries would be a major downgrade to the capability of the device. I would assume iRex is planning on keeping that, regardless of whether or not they are dropping Mobi DRM support.

Exactly. It's been long standing "common wisdom" that Mobipocket's licensing contract with device manufacturers states that if you support Mobi DRM you are not allowed to support any other type of DRM. It sounds a little rediculous to me that Mobi would do that, but apparently they do.

I don't know where that knowledge of Mobipocket's licensing terms comes from, but it seems to be accepted as correct by most people.

And because of Mobipocket's licensing, Adobe is going to wipe the floor with Mobipocket.

Yeah, it seems like Mobipocket is really hurting themselves with that exclusive licensing term. I'm kind of surprised they do it, if it's really true.

Mobipocket does not exist anymore. You should call them Amazon.
My guess is they want to deliberately kill mobi to sell azw to everyone.
Or maybe they are just stupidly arrogant.
Anyway, even though I would love a few very good dictionaries, there is no way I would pay for DRM ones, especially if mobi dictionaries are soon unreadable on readers that read them now, even without DRM.
All this will not incite me to buy a new reader either when new models come out.

Of course they "exist". Look at http://www.mobipocket.com. They are owned by Amazon, but still a separate company.

No way. Amazon only sell eBooks in the USA. Mobi are a world-wide business.
