Firstly, I don't think this constitutes a true riddle. It is generally accepted that to truly be a riddle the answer must somehow be contained within the question. It must be able to be worked out in a logical manner by deconstructing the question and (usually) using metaphor, similie, allegory or other literary/figurative device in order to intuit the answer.

To me, this is more of a guessing game.

Having said all that.............my attempt at logically working it out.........

How did he get to the island? I'm assuming by boat or plane.

Therefore.........his plane or boat ticket.

It fits in his pocket and reminds him of home since that is where he boarded said plane or boat.

Cheers,

You are right in pointing out that this is more of a guessing game...sad but true...but the rewards have risen considerably, it's over 15000 by now...

Your logical solution is very impressive, it might even be right. I think I'll give it a try, I might not even get through (you know these hotlines) but it might just work and I don't think anybody else has come up with such an "out-of-the-way" answer...^^

Please don't stop suggesting things...

A pocketknife and a pocket fan? Obviously what the guy needs is...

A pocket!

But how that will remind him of home I don't know. Perhaps it's in his lederhosen. Wrong region though.

Two things are given, a pocket knife and a pocket fan (one of these battery driven ones).

The third item is:

1) nothing to make fire
2) no lamp, radio or hanky
3) no toothbrush
4) no batteries
5) no shaving mirror

It is:

1) Something that reminds him of home (Germany, Muensterland (Muenster) is where he lives, he was born in Ibbenbueren and works in Hamburg)

2) it's size is roughly the same as the other two items.

My guess is a magnifying glass. He can use it to make fire, in order to cook with the fish he spears with the knife. The fan can be disassembled and the blades used to clean and de-scale the fish.

I haven't a clue as to what it would remind him of, because I've no idea what Muenster is like.

I'm sure it's already been suggested, but may as well try....

Do you have a list of guesses already given?

Sadly I do not have a list, only a list of hints, but you already know those. The newest one (from today) is that it has nothing to do with music.

This is pretty frustrating, but the longer it takes the higher the Jackpot rises and you get more hints.

If you want to follow the whole thing yourselves, just go to klassikradio.de you can read all about it (in german) and can also listen to the live-stream of the radio station.

So, the end of the story has arrived.

They announced that somebody managed to crack the riddle today...but sadly it was not me. I would never ever have come up with the right answer which was this:

I can't say whether it is that same motif, but it's a "Schneekugel"...how exceptionally silly...

Thanks for all your hard reasearch work and wide range of suggestions...I'll say "better luck next time" to all of us!

In the words of pshwynkies, Wait...What?? Is there an explanation? Or would "butter knife" or "small kangaroo" have worked just as well?
