So to avoid hassle I guess I should buy MOBI files instead, since they can be DRM stripped and converted to e.g. Epub in Calibre so I can get them on the Reader?

After I get answers from Sony and HarperCollins I'll try to be nice to Diesel Books and ask if they can swap my books for MOBI files. Worth a shot.
You should have contacted Diesel and not HarperCollins and Sony. That's just silly. HarperCollins and Sony did not sell you the wrong format. Diesel did. And it is Diesel's fault a confusing listing. By contacting HarperCollins and Sony, I do feel you are going overboard on this. It is a Dielsel issue. And if you ever see listings for ADe and do not specifically see ePub then it's PDF.

What I suggest is buying the ePub from BooksOnBoard, removing the DRM, fixing the paragraph spaces in the CSS and then having a good read.

Landscape is my preferred mode anyway. The letters are bigger and it seems more comfortable for my small hands, because the page buttons are closer. My thumb has to stretch to reach the left button in portrait mode.

BTW, the gym is not going to reimburse me for their lifeguard dropping my bag and breaking the hinge on my lighted cover. The kid denies it, and I can't prove it. Whatever. I put the sticky velcro dots on the back of the 505 and attached it to the cover, and it actually works a lot better. It doesn't flop around inside the cover anymore.

Yup. I've started going through some of the sample ePubs here (zelda's Three Men in a Boat is simply stunning!) and started screwing around with the stylesheets in some of the books that I own (it's nice to have a quiet morning at work). Pretty straightforward to clean them up/fix them. Like I said before, running them through Calibre cleaned them up well enough that I didn't bother going beyond that at the time. Now that I know which attributes to change, I'll definitely be taking that route for the other books in the series.

No. You are wrong--as usual on matters relating to PDF.

The correct--and eminently obvious--conclusion is:

For a 6" screen PDF a letter sized PDF is a bad choice.

I think you miss the point of the conversation. The point is for PURCHASED PDF. No place sells PDF formatted for a 6" eink screen. So why do I have to state the obvious?

I recently bought Unseen Academicals from BooksOnBoard and was really disappointed that the formatting leaves such a huge amount of blank space on each page. The smallest font is also really tiny and the medium is slightly too large with all of the blank space as it doesn't fit a lot of text on screen so you have to turn the page more often. Mine was an ePub version rather than the pdf one. I am really loath to buy another one from there as I find it detracts from the pleasure of reading it somewhat. Some of the free books that came with the reader display the text right up to the edges of the screen so why can't they all behave like that? I know that I could strip the DRM and convert it in Calibre but really why should I have to do that to something I paid through the nose for anyway? If eBooks are to really take off they need to sort things like this out fast I think. This particular book also takes an age to turn the pages (four or five seconds sometimes) but only on certain chapters as some of them then revert back to the normal delay. I think I might have solved that by doing a hard reboot though.

Here is a pic of how mine is displaying.
