Now, scroll down and find button [Manage Attachments] and click. Now, depending on what language you should see several buttons saying [browse for file] or something like that Once you select file click on Upload. If you want upload file that is in format not supported by Mobileread (we support quite a few) you can always zip the file. Please do not upload material for which you do not have rights. It would be nuked by Moderators very quickly. If you want, for example, load some text into the template, load something from Project Guttenberg and not Harry Potter book ;-) Last edited by kacir; 07-08-2009 at 11:43 AM. |

File attached [as zip file]. Inside is an OpenOffice Writer file PRS505reader.odt
Text may be pasted in and formatted according to your taste [default is Palatino Linotype 10.5point]. When ready, 'Export as PDF' and the fonts will be embedded. The pdf will not need resizing as the page size is set to the Reader page size. |

To return to the topic of pdfs for a moment ...
I know there are those who say pdfs are not the best format for ebooks, but ... Firstly, if the page size is set correctly, then there is no need to zoom in and out. Using OpenOffice Writer, I paste in text and format it in a fashion I like. When done, I then 'Export to PDF'. Other people may not like my particular choice of formatting, but they can amend the style to suit themselves. A variety of different fonts can be embedded if you want them. True, file sizes are large, but the memory on the Sony is quite adequate even without an SD card. This is assuming you are starting from plain text, but I think 99% of the material I have on my reader started as plain text. If you find the font or the font size isn't to your liking, you can always go back to the original Writer file and amend the style to suit. Works for me. |

Just thought I'd update briefly on my own thoughts.
It's just not possible to get exceptionally crisp text that approaches what you get in print. I guess that is one aspect of the e-readers that I will hope for improvements in in the future. So rather than obsessing over that detail, which is inherently limited, I decided to re-assess my priorities in typeface experimentation to what will produce good readable body text. There are a few fonts that I have and have been using that I consider my favorites not necessarily because of their perfect clarity, but because they are very easy to read as body text. Those two are Chaparral Pro (I like size 10.5) and Arno Pro Caption (size 10). Avance is also pretty readable at small sizes (10 and under), and there are some others I've been meaning to try out (like Museo), but I haven't spent the time yet. There are also numerous typefaces I don't have that I'd like to try (The Antiqua, Meta Serif, Milo Serif). Actually, between Arno Pro Caption 10pt and Chaparral Pro 10.5pt, I'm pretty satisfied! ![]() However, for those who don't have those options, Gentium Book Basic is free, and does a pretty nice job overall. If I didn't have the commercial fonts, it would be one of my first picks. Grandesign Neue Serif is also free and good, but I think it's just a wee bit dense (while clear, it might not be the most readable for body text). I've been meaning to try out Museo but haven't had the chance. Fontin, as some recommend, isn't bad but not my cup of tea...but it's free so it's always worth a shot. A cursory search for free slab-serif yields a few possible interesting options, but nothing that really strikes my personal aesthetic fancy. |

I am one of the fans of Fontin, I do think it renders quite well on an eink screen at a small size. And for those who cannot decide between a serif and and a sans-serif type font, Fontin is it. It's sort of in between.

I agree with Jon--I really do like the way Fontin renders on the reader.

I may have missed this somewhere along the line... Is there a way to change the spacing between the lines of text? Fontin has been working fine for me, but I'd prefer just a little more space between the lines of body text. I didn't see anywhere in the Calibre conversion tool that would allow me to modify the spacing, but I'm new to these types of mods and may have overlooked it.
Thanks. |

Line spacing/leading can be changed by adding the line-height property. I've found a line-height of ~135% works well. Unless specified otherwise, the 505 seems to default to 10pt text, so this bumps the leading up to 13.5pt. You may want to go higher or lower depending on your tastes.
