Seriously, what's a swede? |

A large yellow root vegetable. I think it's also called a rutabaga?

NOOOO! NOT RUTABAGAS! My mom used to stink up the whole house when she cooked it! Somehow, we ended up with a can in the pantry soon after we married. It moved with us. We still have it. Sort of an heirloom can of diced rutabaga now. NOOOOO! |

"rutabaga" sounds like a word someone made up as a joke.

i just looked up rutabaga on wikipedia, and it claims the scots name for it is "neep". this is not helping the credibility of this alleged root vegetable any.

STOP! We have completely overlooked the freaky fact that Sparrow and Am actually like this horrible thing mashed and spread on bread for sandwiches. There's not enough whisky in Scotland to make that make sense!

If we're talking about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutabaga, then yup - rutabaga, swede, neep, yellow turnip etc
![]() I didn't like it much as a child - I took a large mouthful expecting it to be mashed spud! But as an adult, especially after being introduced to it with butter and whisky, I rather like it (and yes, I have eaten it on bread ![]() |

The whiskey I understand as a necessary ingredient in order to eat this, but how can it possibly do anything but ruin a good pat of butter? This is bringing back lots of bad childhood memories. I'm gonna have nightmares tonight!

It makes it all buttery and whisky-ey and mmmm
I like brussels sprouts, too. But not cooked so much they're soggy, and not the really huge ones. And - not in sandwiches! |

I too love Brussel sprouts, although, slightly off topic, a friend of mine once laughed so hard during a works Christmas lunch that a whole Brussel sprout came out of his nose, which kind of put me off them for a while!
