Are you sure your Cybook is completely recharged ?
Mine had a similar screen one time, and I could reset/restart it only after hours of charge...

Unfortunately this is not a battery issue. The fracture, running vertically down the screen on the left side, is clearly visible in the picture. It's unquestionably a broken screen substrate, I regret to say.

I'm relucant to disagree with HarryT, but I've taken a close look at the image you posted, and normally with broken substrate, the break lines look like any other broken glass - smooth, but not exactly straight, and not exactly aligned along the screen.

I think this looks more like a controller problem. Assuming, of course, that you've tried leaving it on charge overnight first.

I'd email Bookeen with this screen shot and see what they say. If it's stlll in warranty, it should be covered if I'm right.

Tried reflashing the memory, nothing doing. It has not been dropped, has always been in the case and there is absolutely no visible sign of damage. I mean, I pick it up, read and then put it down again. How can it be damaged? If these things are that fragile, perhaps it's time to get back to the drawing board. Is it really the screen or could it be the processor, etc? Any ideas to get this thing working again?

Not at all. This is one situation in which I'd be only too happy to be wrong!

Look at the attached file:

The red and green lines show where the glass is broken, and the green one is explicit about the broken screen, if there was only the red one, we could think about a driver problem, but the green one is really explicit.

The white lines circled with the blue oval, is clearly a driver problem, but this particular screen have it's substrate glass broken, it's undeniable.

Yes, that's what I spotted, too. It really does look quite unmistakenly like a fracture in the substrate to me, I regret to say.

Bookeen charged me €100 for the screen too. The worst thing is that after I sent the cybook back and made the payment, there have been no replies from Bookeen. It's been a week already and they are not answering my emails about when they will ship it back to me.

Does anyone have their phone number?

Unfortunately (or fortunately), you're both wrong.

I couldn't be sure before today, but I just accidentally let my CyBook discharge completely. On trying to start-up, it displayed a very similar screen, including the diagonal line in the vertical stripy area. I suspect that ralfm1's cybook's screen is fine, but the Cybook is either completely discharged or has a damaged controller. Here's my screen for comparison.

I was thinking of a problem of too-low battery, but...
Seems, with Pdurrant's picture, I could be right...

I´ve experienced similar patterns during freezes and drained batteries, however, most of the time the last picture was still faintly recognisable.
I assume it happens when the device dies down during screen flash. Thus, the pattern should look differently on that occasions with screen flash turned of.

If so, the substrate might not be broken at all for these two - it could still be a "trivial" crash - thus the pattern - which damaged something else preventing the CyBook from starting and / or accessing the screen. This does not neccessarily mean the screen is not dead anyway, I am afraid.
