While I would prefer the things you mentioned, they weren't compelling enough for me to upgrade as the similar functionality on the Kindle 1 works just fine for me

Now, if they came out with a device that also read DRm'd ePub and had a cover with a built in light.....

You are a GREAT parent, especially for the Pratchett part of the gift. She has a lot of fun reading ahead of her with those 35 books.

Your daughters children probably won't even touch a paper book, it will be all ebooks by then!

A day or so later, she comments in passing, "Dude, the Kindle is the best thing ever!" Now, she carries it with her everywhere she goes. To my shock, she disconnected it from my Amazon account and set up her own account. I believe she's bought the whole Twilight series.

The Kindle 1 is her first ebook reader. She has no problems with the user interface as she has no basis for comparison though she did say that it took her a few hours to get used to it. I expected to have to spend an hour or so explaining it to her, but that never happened. She's never read a manual in her life and she does very well with computers and video games.

I too believe that, "Dude, the Kindle is one of the best things ever," though I vastly prefer the K 2 to the K 1. However, I'm not telling my daughter that.
Awesome for you to do this for your daughter! I have a quick and maybe silly qwuestion. I also want to order all of the Sookie Stackhouse books (as a fan of True Blood), but I'm not sdure if I should be looking at the Sookie Stackhouse novels or the Southern Vampire Mysteries or if they are one and the same.

Any info would be most welcome!

BTW, who cares if your daughter calls you "Dude"? At least she speaks to you, right?
Cheers!!

She doesn't always call me "Dude."

Search "Southern Vampire Mysteries" on Amazon, that'll give you the nine that are available. Searching "Sookie Stackhouse" will probably get you the same list. Searching "True Blood" is less helpful. The books diverge from the TV series around about episode 5 or 6. Ms. Harris reckons that they are separate experiences and that she appreciates and enjoys Allan Ball's treatment that way. The books are all written in first person which doesn't always work well in film treatments so the TV series includes other POVs and events of which Sookie would have been ignorant.

And, yeah, my step-daughter talks to me. She's a typical 16 year old with typical concerns and she's very funny. She has a great sense of humor as well as a sense of irony. My wife says that she and I are so alike that it's amazing I'm not her actual father. Some days, I feel like I'm the luckiest "Dude" alive.

Anytime you are looking for all the books in a series, or the correct reading order in a series, try Fantastic Fiction:

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/

It's a (pardon the pun) fantastic site for finding author & title information.

I own all 3 and use all 3. If I had to pick ONLY one, it would be the DX for me - b/c of the screen size. I use Kindles only for reading books, not documents, so the PDF question was not an issue. If you have old(er) eyes or have trouble reading the print size in paperbacks, then the extra $ for the DX IMHO is worth it. The biggest complaint I have with the DX is losing the buttons on the left side of the screen - even though I am right handed, I tend to hold the Kindle in my right hand & use my left to turn pages. Flipping it upside down is awkward for me, but I will continue trying it.

That said, if you want just a really great reader the K2 is the obvious choice. Its functionality over the K1 is its selling point: the K1 is klunky - in physical design, use of dictionary, accessing whispernet, etc. The K2 provides a fine reading screen, great dictionary access, ability to adjust line spacing, etc. If you have young eyes & no problems with the smaller screen size, go for a K2. Just be prepared for lots of page turns.

Browse the threads from early June here - there were quite a few comparisons done - esp. between K2 & DX.

Unless PDF is important to you, it sounds like you should get the K2.

I vote for kindle 1. The SD card allows some kind of sorting, which is not possible without.

It also allows for more books to be added, because you aren't limited to a preconceived notion of how many you should have.

AND it has a user replaceable battery, at $19.99. The K2 has to be shipped to Amazon to have the battery replaced and once the warranty is over, this will cost $59.00 plus shipping.........and you aren't guaranteed to get your same Kindle back. (Per square trade)

Except the K1 is ugly, has terrible buttons, and doesn't have many of the newer features the K2 has.

Its not ugly, the buttons are fine as long as you have the minimal manual dexterity needed to function, and none of the 'newer' features are that important.

I find the K1 buttons are really only a problem if you want to use without a cover and while it doesn't have the sleek look we expect in today's gadgets, its far from ugly.

But if I were buying today, I would probably buy a K2 unless I could find a K1 with at least a 1 year warranty on it.
