I'm registered at LibraryThing, Shelfari, and Goodreads. Of those, I use Goodreads much more often. I'm not sure I can tell you why I prefer it -- I think it's because it allows me to organize my books in a way that makes sense to me. I did pay for the lifetime membership at LibraryThing and might spend more time over there when time permits.

I joined LibraryThing a while ago, mainly because of the recommendation system. I think GoodReads requires your friends to recommend you books, I could just do that here in the forums or most likely on Facebook where my friends are already registered (and the readers have the WeRead app).

Personally, I am at LT because that is where I started and added all my books to. I have been to lazy to try GoodReads.

Like many of you I tried all the popular sites, LibraryThing, GoodReads, Shelfari and liked aspects of each of them but none were exactly what I was looking for. LibraryThing I just didn't like the user interface and it just didn't jive with me, but I liked the recommendation aspect. Shelfari I though had a nice modern look and feel to it but the database didn't work too well and some of my books were duplicated especially books with similar names or series. Good Reads seemed pretty decent but I found I didn't use the social aspect at all. I really just was looking for a place to keep track of what I have read and possibly have it recommend new books to me.

Then I came across the LivingSocial site one day and tried it out. Everything seemed to work right i.e. all my books were easily entered in(I think I was able to import from a cvs file if I recall correctly), it has recommendations and can also merge with Facebook and pick up any of your friends who also use the service. I don't seem to have many friends who read, lol. LivingSocial also have sections for Beer(!!), Movies, TV, Video Games and some others. I haven't delved too far into the other sections yet but so far the books section has been working well for me.

Here is a link if anyone wants to check it out http://books.livingsocial.com/

I just wanted a place to catalogue my pbooks at first. So I signed up for LibraryThing, bought the CueCat and have gotten most of my paper collection loaded. Then I created tags for the books I have duplicated in ebook or audiobook. My plan is to offload the paper versions once I have the e-versions. So, librarything works fine for me...I don't need the social stuff, or the recommendations. I paid $25 for what I think is a lifetime subscription for all my books and that works for me. Now all I need is a google phone w/the internet package so when I am out I can double check that I'm not duplicating.

I agree with you that the lifetime subscription is well worth it... but the more time I spend on LibraryThing the more irritated I become at how buggy it is. Is this a recent thing, or has its fairly active development always caused bugs popping up left right and centre?

Most are, of course, temporary... but many are also just very silly. Buttons for basic functionality should never stop working... and most of the time the problem is some javascript nonsense probably unrelated to the actual functionality. I wish they'd either test stuff better before making it live, or layed off the AJAX.

Ahi,
I haven't used it in awhile...during the school year I've been too busy teaching and grading to deal with anything extra. The last books I uploaded were way before the new upgrades, so I don't know if they have caused bugs or what. I agree, though, if there are a lot of problems it will frustrate me as well.

most of the problems happen at the wee hours in the morning, during the day I find it more stable. so I think they do all their tinkering at night and through the night.

the new collections work pretty well once you make your own.

Has anybody of you tried anobii.com? It's the most common I know here in Spain.

Living Social looks like a part of Facebook. No thanks at all.

It's not a part of Facebook if you're worried about that. You can however link it to a facebook account as far as I can tell.

I'm reading_fox on LibraryThing, and fairly active there - more so than here - leave me a comment if you want specific help with a feature.

To me that is LT's biggest downside - it isn't always intuitive.

If all you care about is a record of your reading, than LT may not be the best place for you. It was initially set up as a formal catalogue site, where you can record the precise details of every edition of every book you own, with space to make your own marginalia. The marginalia has yet to be implimented but a vast array of other features are around!

It did have a buggy spell a year or two back, but since then I've found it remarkably bug free. I agree there testing isn't always perfect, but nearly everything works all the time : although I'm not in US timezone so may miss the peak traffic. They've recently added yet more servers, so should have better capacity for another few months until the load picks up again!
Some issues are caused from the users sides - check your brouser settings and updates!

I'm on Goodreads as well, only took me about 30 minutes to enter close to 400 books.
It's free, I like the way it works and looks, and I semi-forced some friends to sign up as well so I'm kinda using the social aspect of it.
I really like how you can compare taste in books with others there.

Have a few 'foreign language' - or well, non-English, since for me English is a foreign language ) - books in there as well, no problem finding them in their database.
